“Uh, actually we just buried my dad.”

“Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize that the funeral is today.”

Her face is bright red and I didn’t mean to embarrass her. I just didn’t want to lie to her.

“It’s okay. He wasn’t much of a dad. I actually wanted to see if you did landscaping? I need to fix up my dad’s house and sell it.”

“I don’t officially, but I would love to help you with some ideas,” she says with that sweet smile of hers.

“That would be great. Thanks, Evangeline,” I say honestly.

“Of course,” she says and I want to ask her out but it doesn’t seem like the right time.

“I’ll talk to you later,” I promise and she nods as I turn and head back toward the car.

I climb in and we drive the remaining blocks back to the hotel in silence.

“What time are you leaving in the morning?” I ask.

“Eight,” Gray says.

I can see him staring at me in the reflection on the elevator doors and I try not to shift. He’s watching me like I’m a puzzle and he can’t figure out how to solve me.

“Did you want to grab dinner tonight?” Gray asks as we stop on my floor.

I want to say yes and spend more time with my brother but my arm is killing me and I have an appointment at the VA to go over the latest x-rays.

“I need to make a few calls and then I have a doctor appointment in Denver in two hours. It was good seeing you both though.”

“You too,” Nora says, hugging me goodbye before she steps to the side so that Gray and I can talk.

“I’ll talk to you soon. Let me know if you need any more help with the house or if you need anything else. Let me know how the doctor appointment goes,” Gray says, his voice thick with emotion.

I know that today has been hard for him. Being back here is hard for all of us.

“I will. See you guys.”

With that, the elevator doors close and I head back to my room alone. I make a call to an inspection company and arrange for them to come check out the house tomorrow. Then it’s time for me to head over to Denver for my appointment.

I rub my shoulder as I sit and wait to be called back. It doesn’t take long and as soon as the doctor comes in, I know that it’s probably not great news.

“So, it’s still inflamed and I don’t love the way that the bone is mending,” he says as he flips through my file.

“So, I’ll need another surgery then?” I ask him, my stomach in knots.

“I’m not sure yet. We won’t know for a few more weeks. For now, just take it easy. Rest it, ice it if you need to, and I’ll write you another prescription for the pain.”

I nod, not liking what he’s saying but at least it’s not like I need another surgery right now. That only adds weeks to my recovery time and I’m already sick of the bandages and slings.

“Thanks, doc.”

He nods and I make another appointment for a month from now before I get back in the car and head to Rosewood.

Looks like I’ll be hanging around Rosewood for longer than I thought.
