He is becoming unstable and getting angrier by the second. “I didn’t think I needed to. Seriously? Don’t come into my office unless it’s work-related or I’ve asked you to. Do you understand?”

When he starts yelling at me, heat travels up my spine and flushes my face. I want to scream at him so badly, but I need this job.

“Hudson Lee Finnegan!” a woman yells his name. I turn the other way to find an elderly woman and another around my sister’s age.

“Mom, what are you doing here?” His tone calms down as he addresses her.

I can’t keep my laughter inside. Hudson darts his crazed eyes at me, informing me to shut up without using words. I can’t help it. You could tell he listens to her. A few of the guys are laughing and mocking him now. That’s not going to help, and only make him more furious.

“Why are you yelling at this poor young girl? I raised you better than that.”

He apologizes to his mom and then to me. His mom grabs my arm and steers me to the break room.

“Don’t mind my son. He is a jerk sometimes. His temperament isn’t what it used to be.”

Once she sits down, I urge her to reveal to me all his most embarrassing moments. Instead of giving me what I want, she says, “I got a message from Justin saying a woman walked in and demanded a job. I wanted to witness it for myself, but seeing him yelling at you is great.”

“You enjoy the fact your son was yelling at me?” My resting bitch face gives up my anger. What is wrong with this woman? How is that a good thing?

She smiles. “My son doesn’t convey emotion very often. In fact, since he’s been back, he hasn’t lost his temper until you showed up. He’s quite the control freak, too. Most of us do anything to rile him up, but he doesn’t laugh or smile.”

Taking all this in makes me very depressed. Emotions are part of human nature. How does he function? “So, are you saying he’s always this broody? I just can’t believe that.”

“Yes! Been that way for years. We need someone to bring him out of his funk. Show him how great life is if he would just open up to people.”

Hudson did seem very guarded, but I have only known him for a short period. Poor guy just needs some love in his life. He comes off as the guy that works too much and doesn’t spend enough time on himself. Maybe that’s why he’s so set on keeping his personal and professional life separate?

“Can I ask you a favor? Of course, you have the option to say no.”

“Sure.”

“I’ll ensure you maintain this position if you keep accomplishing what you’re doing. You being in this place is encouraging him to show emotion, and you’ve made more progress in one day than we have in years.”

She already knows my answer because she says, “This is going to work. I know it.” She gears me up with things he despises and loves. She didn’t just want me to piss him off but make him happy, too. Lorelai snatches my phone and programs three numbers into it. “I’ve added myself as well as Tina and Kassie.”

When we part ways, I no longer feel sorry about driving Hudson crazy. This is where I wholeheartedly dig into my top-secret mission.
