“Paula.” That gruffness didn’t sound in the least bit fake. “Come to the party with me.”

“No.” Now they were both whispering.

“Then let me change your mind.”

“You’re welcome to try,” she heard her own voice challenge, followed by his indrawn breath. He was suddenly so close her skin tingled. He bent toward her. But he paused at the very last second, millimeters from her mouth.

“Did you have anything in your coffee?”

That startled her into blinking. “What?”

“In your coffee. What do you take with it?”

“Um, sugar?”

“You drink it black?”

“Yes.”

“Good.” He closed the last bit of distance between them.
