“That’s a good one,“ Lia said. “Die Hardis mine. I like action movies. But they can’t be too predictable.LoveJackie Chan.”

“She’s made me watchDrunken Mastertwice already this week.” March sounded agonized. “Does anyone here even care about my vote? Because my vote is none. There is no such thing as a good Christmas movie.”

“You liked the Grinch!” Lia protested.

“I tolerated it.”

“Paula.” Maylin’s voice turned serious as she plopped down on her husband’s lap and snuggled into his body. “Very important question. What do you think about Superman?”

Paula relaxed into a seat as well, then found her hand taken by Bastian. “The movies or the animated series or the comics or the TV show? And if TV, which one? Or are you talking about the general concept?”

“She codes,” Bastian murmured.

“Any of them,” Maylin said.

Paula shrugged. “They’re all right. I prefer the teams.”

“Teams,” Maylin said eagerly. “Like the Avengers? The movies are my absolute favorite.”

A part of Paula was thrown. These people were turning out to be fun. But on another level, it was strange to think she was sitting here in a private room of the Spencer mansion while some of the wealthiest people in the city probed her for her tastes in movies. “And X-Men, yeah. Most movies of that type. And offbeat ones, likeThe Meteor Man.”

“I haven’t heard of it.”

“One of my brother’s picks,” Paula confided. “It's silly but fun. He’s a film buff, he knows all the obscure films. I’m more of a reader, but he’s sworn to convert me. I’m slowly going through his list of favorites.”

“What do you read?”

“Fantasy, mostly. And comics.”

March perked up. “You like comics?”

“Some.”

Bastian said, “Your brother…you mean your brother Owen who’ll be in Seattle?”

“No, this is Calvin,” she said in surprise. “He’s the eldest. He’ll be there, too.”

“How many brothers do you have?”

“Just the two.”

“Calvin is the one who lives in Seattle?”

She was impressed he was keeping track. “Yep, that’s his base. He spends a lot of the year biking around the world, so I’m lucky when I get to see him.”

March had taken out his phone. “All right. I’m ready.” Paula looked inquiring. “For the list.”

“Of Calvin’s favorites?” March nodded and Paula started reciting from memory, “Let’s see...Jason and the Argonauts, that’s supposed to be mega creepy…Repo Man,The Matrix,Brazil—I already watchedBrazil, not sure what to say about that one—I’m Gonna Git You Sucka—if you like parodies?”

“I like parodies.”

“Then you’ll love it. Um, what else…Rear Window,The Seven Samurai,The Sting, those were all good...he also likes anime but his selections tend to be too artsy for my blood. I can forward you the whole list, but honestly, you really don’t want to trust him. His favorite film of all time isDragon, the one about Bruce Lee.”

Lia gasped. “Dragonwas amazing. It waswonderful.”

Paula grinned at her. “You are living in a dream world, but that’s okay.” She turned her head, breathing in the delicious aroma that Bastian exuded, and looked up at him. “And you? Best superheroes?”

“Batman,” Bastian said without a moment’s hesitation.
