She considered Trey, “Let me guess. Batman isyourfavorite, too.”

“Fuck, yeah.”

“You?” she asked March.

March took a seat. “Daredevil all the way. Maybe The Punisher.” He looked up at Lia. “Who’s yours, darling? Wait, you like the X Men...so, let me think. Wolverine, Jean Gray or Storm?”

Lia was shaking her head. “Wonder Woman.”

“I should have known,” he said, pulling her into his lap, and his breezy attitude was replaced with heated intensity, and suddenly it was embarrassing.

Paula turned back and caught Bastian staring down at her with similar intensity.

Maylin crossed her arms over her chest with mock sternness. “All right, you passed that test, Paula. Next question.”

Paula forced her attention back to Trey’s wife. “Test? What are you talking about?”

“We needed to vet you to see if you were a spy.”

“Aspy?”

“Yes. After all, you infiltrated Bastian’s defenses. That’s unheard of. He’s never—”

“All right, that’s enough, May,” Bastian cut in. “She doesn’t need to hear that.”

Oh, yes, I do.She wished he hadn’t interrupted. Bastian had never...what?

“You’ve never let us talk to one of your dates,” Maylin complained. “Let me get to know her. I’m still not sure she’s real.”

Maylin was acting tongue-in-cheek, but a tiny-bit serious too. Paula nearly told her to go to hell. But very few people seemed to be looking out for Bastian. His family certainly didn’t.

“You could just pinch me,” she said, and Maylin burst into giggles. “Fine, I’ll take thistestof yours. But it had better be good.”

Bastian chuckled and said, “Watch out, May.”

“That’s right,” Paula nodded. “I’m testing you on this test.”

Maylin grinned. “Awesome. The question is, how do you feel aboutLove Field? And before you answer, you should know that is literally my favorite romance ever. But it’s an interracial couple, the other way around from you guys,” she swirled her fingers, “and if you think that’s, like, bad in any way, I will cry.”

Paula relaxed, smiling. “I haven’t heard of it, but if I see it I’ll let you know.”

“That movie where they go on a bus? I saw it.” Lia frowned at Maylin. “It wasn’t that great.”

“What?” Maylin said. “What? Notgreat? Lia!”

“It was historical. I don’t like historical movies.”

Maylin moaned. “But the guy. Theguy,oh, my Jesus, Dennis Haysbert. Hey, speaking of hotties, did either of you see that old one with Rosanna Arquette and Eric Roberts, with all that old style music? I can’t think of the title right now but there was—”

“Baby, sorry to break this up, but we need to pick up the kids,” Trey inserted, staring down at his phone. He glanced up. “Anyone want to hit up our place later?”

March declined for himself and Lia, pleading other obligations, while Bastian grimaced. “This is all the party I can take. I hate this damn season.”

“You do it to yourself, dude, remember that. Paula, what about you?”

“Ah, no,” she said, pointing at Bastian. “I’ll stick with him.”

“Give me your numbers, ladies,” Maylin said to Paula and Lia. “We’ll do a movie night.”
