Prologue

Kit

“I bet you can’t finish that last beer.”

“You’re so stupid.”

“Then why are you the one that can’t seem to stay in your seat?”

“Fuck you, man. I just wanted to pick up this penny.”

“Whatever. You’re trashed.”

At this point, both drunken idiots are falling off their stools, getting dangerously close to spilling their cheap beers all over me.

“I can totally finish that beer, dude!”

“You want to make a bet?”

“I don’t need no bet, but I’ll take whatever lame-ass bullshit you want to wager. I don’t plan on losing.”

“You lose…and you have to hike up to that place down the highway, back up in the woods off mile maker 13. You know the place- where all the omegas that crazy bitch has sacrificed haunt the woods.”

“Fuck that. No bet is worth going there. My cousin’s roommate disappeared there. No way in hell I’m going anywhere near there.”

Balding drunken idiot number one starts laughing maniacally. “You’re just a scared little pussy. Besides, it’s only alphas that turn up missing.”

I throw some cash on the bar and down the rest of my slightly less cheap beer, because I’ve heard enough. We’ve been hanging around this hole in the wall for weeks now, hoping to hear more info about some female cult that’s hidden nearby. Until now, we hadn’t heard more than whispers. Seems few are willing to mention the local ghost story.

After I cut through the small collection of crowded tables, I bang on the bathroom door three times to let my packmates know my it’s me. James doesn’t bother zipping up his pants before opening up to me.

I watch him and Colter re-arrange their clothing since they’re a couple of horndogs that couldn’t wait until we got back to the hotel to fuck, nodding my head towards the exit.

“Got the info,” I say, unwilling to say more before we’re somewhere more private.

Colter stumbles at that, a look of disbelief on his face. “You serious, boss?”

I nod, ready to get the hell out of here so I can wash the smell of desperation and loneliness off of me that all the patrons in this bar seem to stew in.

Colter slaps my ass as he walks by me, both of my packmates practically sprinting to the jeep.

We know how to find our omega, now we just need a plan.
