Chapter Six

Calai

Consciousness returns to me as though I’m looking through a dense fog, my head pounding and my body stiff and exhausted. I have no idea what time it is, no idea what’s happening, and no idea where I am.

I can feel two heavy bodies pressed against me and there’s something tied over my mouth and my eyes, so I can’t see anything even if I wanted to open my eyes more. My body twitches, alerting my captors to my state of wakefulness.

“You’re safe,” a warm, rich voice rumbles into my ear. The words melt me a little bit, the close way they’re holding me helps even more. I don’t know these people, don’t understand the way their bodies look, but they’re clearly human and I don’t feel any injuries, so thus far, they don’t mean me any harm.

“We’re going to take your binds off, but you have to promise us not to scream. Can you do that, pet?”

I would probably agree to anything right now if it gave me any details about my capture. What could they possibly want with me?

Big, rough hands peel off the blindfold and untie the gag, massaging my head a little bit where the knots were tied. I blink my eyes open slowly, trying to adjust to the sudden brightness flooding my eyes. We’re in some sort of tent with muted sunlight peaking through the seams, and I can hear birds calling and trees swaying outside. Hopefully this means these strangers haven’t taken me too far from the cabin.

“How are you feeling little omega?”

I try to turn my head to see the face behind me and end up on my back. Two massive bodies crowd either side of me, turned onto their side. It’s unnerving to be the sole focus of two such intense beings, but there’s nothing to hide behind right now.

“Who are you?Whatare you?”

The being with the strange blonde hair on his face seems to find this amusing, because his eyes and face crinkle.

“I’m Kit, that sexy beast is Colter.”

I inhale, and I get this intoxicating mix of melted chocolate from the furry one and fresh bread mixed with almond on the less hairy one with darker skin. I’ve only had chocolate a couple of times, but I’d know its smell anywhere. Just this person’s voice alone has all the hairs standing fully erect along my arms, making me want to squirm.

“Um…hi. Why, exactly did you take me?” And then I remember Eln, and I bolt upright, frantically searching. “Where is she?”

I feel those rough hands trace gentle circles on my back, preventing me from tipping into hysteria again. “Shhhh, pet. Lay back down. Your body needs time to heal after the shock you went through. Colter carried your friend’s body back to where they’d find it at the compound. She’s safe from any predators.”

Tears slip unbidden from my eyes, reminding me of my final wishes right before she died. “I was wishing her harm, and then she…she…”

A strange, soothing sound emits from Colter’s chest, and it’s intoxicating. I feel my whole body go lax and my head turn towards it.

“It wasn’t your fault, pet. We heard you tell her not to. You might have been thinking that, but it had no bearing on her end, do you hear me?”

I’m locked in on this strange rumbly sound, so Kit’s voice sounds a bit muffled.

“Do. You. Hear. Me?” Kit’s voice turns sharper, cutting through the fog. I turn my head towards him, keeping my body curled into Colter’s. “Yes…what are you doing to me? Why am I reacting like this to that strange sound?”

I immediately tip my head back to Colter, nuzzling my face into his chest. I don’t know why I feel the need to do this, or how this is staving off my panic, but I need it.

“I’m purring for my pretty little omega. You were getting worked up again. You’re going to hurt, and that’s okay, but nothing we can do right now can change your friend’s outcome, and you’re our concern now. We need you to stay relaxed.”

“Why…so you can keep stealing me farther away?”

Kit laughs a little bit. “We don’t need to purr for you to take you away, pet. It drives us mad to see you upset. We’re biologically wired to need to soothe you when you’re hurting.”

I nod, letting my eyes droop. “Why do you keep calling me omega? I told you my name was Calai.”

“Because you’re our omega,” Colter informs me.

“Don’t know what…that means. And by the way, what are you? Why are you so large? Are you…a different species? You look so similar to me in most ways.” I let my hands seek out Colter’s face, tracing the strange prickly hair just beginning to grow through its face.

They both stiffen. “Calai, how long have you lived in that compound?”

“Um, forever? It’s been my home as long as I remember.”
