CHAPTER5

Cyrus Holt

When the tiny bundle fell asleep in my arms, I couldn’t bear to disturb her. I let her rest. I knew parts of her punishment had been hard on her, but I also knew she’d needed every second of it. She was holding onto her fear of Anthony and how he’d turned her life upside down and she’d needed to let that go.

I’d forced it out of her when I put her over my knee. The spanking had been hard mainly because I didn’t want her lying to me again, but her tears hadn’t just been from the soreness of her bright red little ass. She needed someone to make her let go and I had been that man for her.

I slid my fingers up and down her spine so gently that she curled in closer to me. She whimpered softly in her sleep, and I knew that I would turn the world upside down to keep her safe. She was mine now and I would be the one to put a bullet straight into Anthony’s skull if he ever even thought about touching her again.

As carefully as I could, I lifted her from my lap and tucked her into bed. My seed dripped down her thighs. I decided then that I liked that. When she woke, it would remind her of the way she rode my cock hard enough to make us both come at the same time.

She was perfection.

Beautifully thick eyelashes fluttered against her cheek. She made a soft sound in her sleep and reached for me. I sat down beside her on the bed, and she seemed to settle. Her small knuckles brushed against my thigh and the need to protect her, to take care of her and give her everything she ever wanted in life was suddenly overwhelming.

I’d turned my back on my old life, but I would go back for her.

Years ago, my name had invoked a sense of fear in anyone that dared cross me. I knew I still had enough pull to bring down anyone I wanted if I needed to.

Ava nestled herself further under the blankets. When I stood up, she didn’t stir. I moved to the leather armchair, watching her closely as I sat down. She was in a deep slumber now and I didn’t wake her. I wanted her to get all the rest she needed.

I reached for my phone and opened the footage from last night. I knew the faces of the men that were after her. Anthony was the kingpin of the Montagna family, but I also knew that he was new and far too green to lead the family successfully for very long. He’d end up pissing off someone in his attempt to prove himself. His reign wouldn’t be a long one, especially if he didn’t drop his mission to take Ava for himself.

Several of the men were nothing more than his soldiers. Honestly, they were probably loyal to Anthony simply because of what his father’s reputation had amounted to. I doubted they’d stick around for the petulant power trip of a kid who had only just reached the legal drinking age.

I knew Jon well though. He was the Montagna family consigliere.

In the past, he and I had been allies, collaborating on several business deals in which we’d combined our power to buy out strategic members of Congress and the mayor, along with numerous people on the police force. I’d backed up our collective efforts with my own allies who were loyal only to me, but I’d always seen Jon as a reasonable individual. Between him and Anthony’s father Mike, the Montagnas had been a powerhouse in their own right, at least until Mike had been killed in a territory dispute not long ago.

I still had informants in place. I kept myself in touch with the pulse of the city, both for my own curiosity and to protect myself in case anyone ever got the incredibly reckless idea that they could knock me off to increase their own power and reputation.

I wasn’t stupid. Not everyone was made to survive in this kind of life.

I dialed Jon’s number and pressed the phone to my ear. He picked up my call on the second ring.

“I never thought I’d see this number calling my phone again,”he answered. His tone was nostalgic and not at all malicious, which was what I was hoping to hear.

“I’d like to meet up with you to discuss something, like old times,” I said. In the past, I’d met with Jon rather than his boss to deal with sensitive issues. I’d always liked him for his logically sound mind and on rare occasion, he’d come up with a better way to handle something than I had. I respected that.

“I hear they’ve got some properly aged barrels of the good stuff at the Irish pub we liked way back when,” Jon replied.

“That place is still kicking, huh?” I gazed around the room, brushing my thumb across the edges of my beard thoughtfully.

“They’ve made some good friends over the years.”

“Friends like you, I imagine,” I chuckled.

“Perhaps,” he laughed openly.

“How about tonight then? Eight o’clock sound good to you?” I offered.

“I’ll be there. I’ll order us both a double,” he answered.

“I’m looking forward to it,” I replied.

“Me too, Cyrus,” he responded, and I hung up the phone. Ava still hadn’t stirred, so I made a few more calls. By the time I finished checking on the current state of things as well as calling in a few favors for her and her comfort, I noticed that her eyes were finally open. For a moment, she looked mildly panicked, like she didn’t quite remember where she was.

“Did you have a good nap?” I asked her, smiling at the way her eyes lit up when she saw me sitting there with her.
