“Eventful as always. Enough small talk though. I take it you’re calling about this business with Jon and the girl,” he offered.

“I am. Jon was doing me a favor and it seems that he’s no longer available to update me,” I explained.

“He’s sort of indisposed at the moment,” Alex sighed. He took a deep breath on the other line. I knew him well enough to know he was shaking his head with disapproval. “Anthony found out about his meeting with you and lost it. Now he’s on some sort of revenge kick to teach both the girl and his consigliere a lesson about how powerful he is.”

“Do you know where he is?”

“He’s got a penthouse suite at the Four Seasons where he’s holding Jon. They roughed him up a bit, but he’s still alive,” he explained.

“Do you know the room number?” I questioned.

“1501. I’ll leave an extra key for you on top of the ice machine,” he answered.

“I knew I could count on you,” I grinned.

“Always, boss,” he replied, and I hung up the phone.

“Take me to the Four Seasons,” I called out and Frank grunted, wasting no time as he drove away.

I leaned back in the seat and sighed. I allowed myself to sink back into the role I’d turned my back on long ago. I opened the keypad in the door and dialed in my code. The door to the secret compartment in the floor slid open, revealing my own personal weapons cache.

The compartment itself was shallow and had room enough for several different types of handguns, a few switchblades, a sniper rifle, and three different assault weapons all equipped with silencers. I picked up my favorite Smith and Wesson 9mm and palmed it. By its weight, I could tell it was fully loaded. I pulled the slide to see that a bullet was already in position, enjoying the smooth way metal glided against well-oiled metal.

“I serviced that one just last week, boss,” Frank piped up.

“Good. I just might have to put it to use today,” I smirked.

“Make every shot count, boss,” he winked.

“Damn right I will,” I assured him, looking forward to finally putting this whole thing to rest.

There were several fully loaded magazines that I tucked away into the pockets of my suit. I hooked the gun into the waistband of my belt. I typed in the code once again and the door slid shut.

I looked out the window to see that we were approaching the city. It was well into the afternoon at this point and the sun was high overhead. I made a few more calls and arranged for some of my own men to meet me a few blocks away from the hotel.

The rest of the ride passed swiftly. We cased the place a few times before Frank was convinced that they weren’t aware of our arrival. He pulled into a parking garage and waved to the doorman, an old-timer who had been there for many years. He recognized Frank and tipped his chin toward a section reserved for higher scale guests.

There was an exclusive exit in case we needed to leave quickly.

My men were already waiting for me. I’d only called in half a dozen bodyguards because it would be easier to accomplish such a mission with less rather than more. All of them were wearing black suits and they bowed their heads in respect to me as I climbed out of the car.

I took a moment to study them, quite pleased with their appearance as well as their open deference for me. Not one looked even remotely afraid, like they had done this a thousand times before.

Frank quickly informed them of the last-minute details before we headed for the hotel. The eight of us strode through a back entrance without any further delay. The door attendant nodded in recognition as we slipped into the elevator. I pushed the button for the fifteenth floor. The ride up was smooth. The doors opened to reveal a small room meant for refreshments. The vending room was just around the corner, and I found a keycard on top of the ice machine just like Alex had said there would be.

Good man.

Room 1501 was all the way down the hall. From my knowledge of the hotel, the suite spanned the entire length of the hallway with an exit to either side. I split my men into two groups, sending one half to ensure that no one left out the other door and took the rest with me.

I palmed my weapon and approached the door silently. I leaned against it, listening for signs of life behind it. I could hear voices, but they weren’t any louder than what would be just a normal conversational level.

I waved the key in front of the lock and heard it slide open. Carefully, I pushed it open. I expected to be ambushed as soon as I entered the suite, but no one was there.

I didn’t know how Anthony had already gotten this far without someone killing him yet.

We slipped into the entryway, all of us armed and ready to take on whatever was waiting for us. The voices continued in a low drawl a few rooms away and we worked our way closer without hesitation now.

We spilled into the main living area of the suite. It was open concept with an enormous fully stocked kitchen, an oversized contemporary-style bar, and several different seating areas. It was meant for entertaining. Many of his men were sprawled out over the furniture. Some of them were playing on the phone, others were talking amongst each other, and a group of them were playing poker on the dining room table.
