Ikeep my distance from Sailor the rest of the night. I don’t want to give her any reason to tell me not to come to her house later. I am definitely going. I’ve hardly been back in Coree Harbor, and I know I can’t stay away another night. I’ve already stayed away sixteen years.

I catch glimpses of her, though. She’s always smiling or laughing. Then she spots me, and that smile fades. This look of pure lust, desire, comes over her. She attempts to hide it, but she can’t.

“Hey, Dad,” Campbell says, pulling my gaze from Sailor. “Can some of the guys spend the night?”

“We don’t have the room at the guest house.”

It’s a valid excuse. I can’t necessarily say that I’m pawning him off to his grandparents’ house so I can go fuck the woman of my dreams. My son has already made it clear that he holds out hope that I’ll get back together with Jolene. That’s going to be a hard life lesson for him.

“That’s why I already called and asked Gram if we could stay at their house, and they already called and asked their dad if it was okay.”

“Sounds like you covered everything.”

“You raised me right, Dad,” he replies with a smirk.

I ruffle his hair. “That I did. It’s fine with me as long as it’s all right with your grandmother.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

He rushes off to the anxiously waiting boys, and they take off toward another ride. I holler to the them that we’re leaving in an hour. It’s going to be the longest damn hour of my life.

I kill time by shopping the vendors, pretending to be interested in homemade jams and canned sauces. I cut the boys’ time short by ten minutes, and you would think I committed a crime. I do let them bring cotton candy home with them and send them to my parents’ house as soon as we get home.

I take a shower and then head out, backing my truck out of the drive without my headlights on so no one sees me leaving. I feel like I’m in high school all over again, only I’m doing things differently this go-round. This time, I’m getting the girl I want.

I drive in silence over to Sailor’s place, turning onto the driveway for the Old Oak Stables a short time later. She mentioned that she lived on the other side of the ranch, so it shouldn’t be hard for me to find it. I spot her Jeep and pull up beside it. A lamp is on in the window, but other than that, her place is dark.

I take a deep breath and get out. I played pro football, but I’m nervous. Like it’s game day, and I don’t know the rules.

If she denies me, I’ll back off. I’ll keep my word. But damn it, I pray that she gives me a second chance.
