Light and shadow

(Liam)

She went tae the kitchen for garbage bags and we spent the afternoon throwing pillows and thingamabobs intae the bags and dragging them out tae the road, where a charity was tae come by with a truck. She let me pick the music on the sound system. I selected a playlist, heavy on the U2.

She looked up as the first song began tae play. “Very interesting.”

I said, “Ye are sure on these candlesticks?”

“So sure. Those were gifts from one of his clients and the only reason they are here is because they fit on that buffet, but honestly they block the view.” She pointed. “And grab that frame, too, that’s an expensive, modern photograph, but I swear it always looked like a breast. I always thought it was cringey.”

I pulled the frame off the wall and looked down on the light and shadow, “Aye it does look a bit like a breast.”

“And why do I have a photo of a breast on my wall? How did I let that happen to me, seriously? Liam, we are starting fresh. This is the very first step.”

I placed the photo in a carton, with some shoes and some bedding from the closet.
