“A few hundred feet in that direction,” Davon answered.

“Good. I’m going to take a little extra time with our slave there. We wanted to delay things, right?” Morgn replied coldly.

I shivered. What the hell did that mean?

He pulled me up to my feet and wound the leash around his wrist. He forced me to walk, keeping his hold on the back of my neck, pushing me forward despite my protests. My stomach dropped at his silence as my mind

raced. My body still pulsed with the aftereffects of my prior punishment, of the humiliation over what they’d done to me and I shook with fear of what was to come.

But I had to survive. I had to survive for my sisters.

One day, I’d kill these Vakarrans and return to them. I just had to get through whatever they threw at me, until I could escape.

But I was still afraid. I could never show it though. I had to be strong.

Morgn marched me through the woods, and I was thankful that they’d given me my shoes back, or else the soles of my feet would be in a sad state. I saw the water of the lake peek through the trees and I gulped with reluctance. What was he planning?

“Let me go,” I begged, unable to help myself.

“It’s too late for that now,” he replied, and I wondered what sort of sadistic brutal plans he had in mind for me next. He was a mystery to me, quieter than the others but I was already regretting my actions and he hadn’t even started to punish me yet.

When we broke out of the trees, my heart started to pound in my chest. He dragged me closer to the water and I heard the rest of the men come out behind us.

Morgn waded straight into the water, which meant I went with him too. The water was cold, and I cried out as the liquid pulled the heat straight from my body.

“What are you doing?” I gasped, already shivering. It was fall and the sun was nearing the horizon, with nightfall soon to come. I was cold, wet, and nervous.

“Teaching you that you are to obey your Vakarran masters, Alaina. You’re a human, you were never meant to be free. It’s your fate to be owned. You need to accept this,” he said calmly, yet his tone was deceptively threatening.

“Just let me go. I won’t tell anyone about you,” I replied, sneering in his direction.

He shook his head.

“It doesn’t work that way, little human,” Morgn warned.

I shivered. Fuck, this water was cold.

His grip on my neck tightened and I gritted my teeth; his hold was harsh. He pushed me down, his strength much greater than mine and I only gulped down a swallow of air just before I broke through the surface of the lake.

The water was hazy, chilling and I struggled against his overpowering strength. The chill was awful. The worst part was I couldn’t rise to the surface; he had all the control.

He held me there for a long moment.

It was dark. I began to panic. I felt so helpless.

A moment later, he allowed me back up. I surged upward. I sputtered and spit out water, glaring at him. How dare he?

Asshole. I sneered up at him. He just shook his head.

He pushed me under once again. No mercy. Cold. Dark. Brutal.

I kicked. I punched. I struggled but nothing was enough to overpower him. He had every ounce of control and I knew it.

I smacked at the surface, trying to push myself out of the water. I didn’t care who I splashed in the process. I needed to get out. I needed to breathe.

He allowed me up again.

I was smart enough not to react. I just tried to catch my breath. I should have tried to run.
