Davon had been assigned a special mission all his own. Ryder had commanded him to work on their ship, stored in a factory a few miles

away. Days passed, and I enjoyed my new life with my mates. I was grateful for every last moment, knowing that it was potentially going to end one day when Commander Nix came for them.

I wasn’t naïve. They’d disobeyed their superior. Their honor and loyalty would be questioned. They would be punished, one day.

I had to enjoy every last second with them.

One night, all five of us gathered on the terrace, but none of them would tell me why. They waited, saying nothing as they demanded that I watch the sky. The stars twinkled above us, and the moon shone brightly, bathing us in cool light.

It was strangely comforting.

Somewhere, far off in the distance, something rumbled loudly, like an engine purring and sputtering, trying to gain traction. Something bright shot up into the sky and I gasped when I realized what it was.

It was their ship, climbing up high into the night, only all of us were here. No one was on the vessel. It burst up into the sparse, fluffy clouds. It rose, higher and higher until I could scarcely see it anymore and then, it exploded across the sky.

The blast echoed, and fire burned bright. It reminded me of the fireworks of old. Of video and pictures documenting the bursts of flame in the sky.

It meant something, and it meant something incredible.

The end of an era and the beginning of a new one.

Ryder pulled me into his arms and kissed me hungrily.

I pulled back, questioning his gaze.

“What’s going to happen now?” I asked.

Davon took my hand in his and I looked back at him.

“We died. Every last one of us killed in an explosion due to an error none of us could detect. Commander Nix will already be receiving satellite footage of the blast. We’ll be confirmed dead within moments. Even Vakarrans couldn’t survive something like that,” he murmured.

I gasped.

“So, what does that mean for us?” I pressed.

Aarom took my other hand in his.

“It means that our lives are ours now. It means the five of us are going to live together here on Earth. It means as our wife, you will bear our young and we’ll worship you as our one true mate,” he answered, and my heart nearly palpated out of my chest.

They’d abandoned their kind.

For me. For us.

“You can’t mean that,” I murmured in disbelief.

“You’re worth it,” Morgn answered.

Tears of joy threatened to fall from my eyes.

I made a decision then. They had abandoned everything for me. They were my world. I was going to trust them with mine. I was going to tell them everything.

“Would you help me get in contact with my sisters?” I asked quietly.

Ryder’s eyes flashed to mine, but he didn’t respond quite yet.

I took a deep breath and told them my story. Told them how my sisters and I had lived in the woods for the past ten years, had survived on our own and flourished together, protecting each other with our strength and love for each other.

All four of them were silent. None of them said a word.
