Or any relationship at that. I can’t remember the last time I went out on a date.

After I finish milking the cows, I feed them. As I am petting Daisy, a throat clears behind me.

I spin around so fast I almost fall over. Righting myself, I look to see who is interrupting my process.

My gaze locks with an all too familiar one.

Gavin.

“What are you doing here?” Sure, my tone has a bite to it, but I am busy and don’t have time for him and his crazy ideas.

I turn around and head to the garden to pick today’s ripe vegetables. I refuse to stare at his perfectly chiseled jaw and perfectly sculpted body. He used to turn my insides to goo, and then I realized how egotistical, arrogant, and self-centered he was.

He easily catches up to me, his long legs outstriding me. “I’ve come to whisk you away. Mother has set up a very elegant picnic for you and me.”

I inwardly groan and roll my eyes. “No thanks. I’m not interested.”

He scoffs. His expression changes as he says, “That’s preposterous! Every woman, young and old, near and far is interested in me.”

“Count me out. I don’t have the time nor the energy right now to date someone. You know this, I’ve explained it to you before.”

Plus, I do not want to go down that rabbit hole.

“That was months ago.”

I get distracted and watch him prop his foot up against the fence post. His designer jeans don’t fit in, no matter how much he tries. He watches me as I grab the basket and shears.

Doesn’t he get it?

“Yeah, and things haven’t changed.” My priority is and will continue to be keeping the bills paid and the chores done.

“The only way you are going to move past your mother disappearing and have a better life is if you take a stand, here and now. Also, if you go on the picnic with me I will guarantee your life will instantly be better than it is right this second.”

I stand, forgetting about the vegetables that need to be picked. “Do you even hear yourself when you speak? You can’t honestly believe I would fall for the shit that comes out of your mouth!”

He leans his head back and laughs. “Such vulgar language for a lady.”

I want to tell him how I truly feel. I want to kick him out of my peaceful garden, but the only words I can muster up are, “Bite me.”

In a fraction of a second, Gavin stalks over to me and pushes me against the brick siding of my house.

“Don’t say something you don’t mean. We can pretend you don’t want me all you want, but I can see your face blushing and feel your heart pounding. This little game of yours is nothing but long drawn-out foreplay.”

With as much strength as I can muster up, I push him off of me. “Don’t get me confused with your groupies. I find you despicable.”

“Your body says otherwise.” His voice is calm and confident.

He’s an ass, but he is right- my body craves his authoritative tone. Hell, if I let my mind think about it, my body craves his strong grasp on my hips and his large, veiny-

Nope. Not going there.

“My body can wait until I find someone other than you.” Anyone, except him.

“You liked it before so you might enjoy it again.”

Turning to look at him, I watch as his smirk gets bigger.

“Ugh, don’t remind me. I was young and stupid once.”
