Before he turned into an arrogant asshole, and before his family’s wealth changed him, he was a semi-decent guy.

We were each other’s firsts and he’s never let me live it down since. Plus, the sex was decent enough that I went back for seconds, thirds, and even fourths.

Shaking my head to free my mind of those memories, I get back to picking the ripe vegetables. I fill the basket with cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, beans, and potatoes.

Gavin lifts the basket off the soil and dusts it off before carrying it inside the house and placing it on the counter next to the sink. Of course, he remembers exactly where it goes.

I make my way to the kitchen sink. “Uh, thank you.”

He moves out of the way so I can clean off the vegetables. I take my time washing the dirt off the potatoes and the prickles off of the cucumbers. When they are good and clean, I place them on the drying mat.

I can use them for supper tonight. Dad would enjoy a nice salad and some fried potatoes, especially after today’s journey.

Setting the basket and shears at the back door, I say, “I think it is time for you to leave. I would like to finish my book before Dad gets back. I should have just enough time to read and prepare dinner.”

He scrunches his face up. “What do you find so fascinating about reading?”

Of course, it is hard for him to understand. He thinks the sun rises and sets from his ass.

“Everything, from the smell of the pages to the words I read. It is nice to escape reality now and then.”

He huffs. “Maybe if I was in your life more, you wouldn’t feel the need to escape reality.”

Yeah, I can’t deal with that right now.

“Goodbye Gavin.” I push him towards the front door.

He opens the front door before turning back around to face me. “Fine, I’ll go, but just remember this moment because you will regret it.”

“I doubt that, but I have your number and know where you live if I want to find you.”

His parent’s house is the only one that is larger than three bedrooms and has more than one story.

In fact, their house is a four-story mansion and sits on top of the hill that overlooks the entire town.

Their house is so big that even if I were blind, I would be able to find it in the middle of the night.

After closing the door behind him, I click the lock in place and then head to my bedroom to grab the book that is resting on my end table before heading back outside to the backyard.

There is the perfect shade tree that I love reading under. The legs of my chair are covered in dirt and grass, permanently a part of the ground. An old moss-covered stump acts like the perfect side table.

I sit down and take a deep breath of the fresh air as a breeze blows by. Opening the book, I notice that the worn-out spine is barely containing the pages. It shows just how much I love this book, but it probably wouldn’t hurt to pick up a spare copy.

Deep into my story, I laugh at a funny part, oblivious to the real world around me.

Motion out of the corner of my eye gets my attention. Looking up from my book, I see several guys carrying boxes.

Who are these guys and what are they doing in my backyard?

“Of course,” I mumble to myself as Gavin comes around the house.

“Gavin, what are you doing?” I stand and place my book in the chair.

He smiles widely. “I’m bringing the picnic to you.”

What? Who does things like this?

“I said I wasn’t interested.”
