Silence stretched around the table as Ella seemed to consider her next words.

“Okay, so let me go back to ten minutes ago—what exactly is going on between you two?”

Cedra’s lips twitched as though she wanted to say something but couldn’t find the words.

Ella plowed ahead. “Cee, you know the ability to heal someone like that comes with...”

“I know,” Cedra said, uncrossing and crossing her arms again. This close, I could see the bunching of her muscles under her coarse work shirt. A sigh of longing almost escaped my lips.

“Comes with what?” I asked automatically, alerted by the look that was passing between Ella and Cedra.

“We haven’t really spoken about that,” Cedra admitted quietly. “It’s too fast; we’ve just met.”

“And you’re already able to heal a burn mark like that?” Ella was incredulous.

“I accidentally took a bit of her blood,” Cedra admitted, a surprising blush stealing up her neck and cheeks.

“Cee!” Ella admonished, shock evident on her face. “How did you ‘accidentally’ do that? Did you trip and fall on her neck, fang-first?”

Cedra looked suitably chastised. I hadn’t known it was a big deal to take a drop of my blood, but there seemed to be a lot about Fanger culture I didn’t know.

Cedra’s gaze finally caught mine again.

“We really need to talk.”

I nodded mutely.

Ella rose from the chair with Cedra’s help. “All right, I’ll leave you two alone. But since we’re keeping secrets now, I’m going to take half of this pie to the barns and eat it by myself. And you’re not to tell anyone. If I take it home, Frowh will want some and I’m in no mood to share with his greedy behind.”

I couldn’t smother my smile. “Of course. Here, let me grab you a plate.”

As Ella waddled out the back door, I yelled after her. “Wait! I’ve been wanting to ask about the babies. Do you know if it’s a boy or a girl?”

“Both—it’s twins!” she yelled back as the late-morning breeze swirled around her. She clutched the plate with half a pie to her chest and waved as she walked away.

“Is she really going to eat all that—” The look in Cedra’s eyes stopped me as I turned back to the kitchen. “What?”

“We need to talk.” Her voice was firm as she reached behind me to pull the back door firmly shut.
