“I can’t think when you’re so near me.”

Twyla’s voice cut into my thoughts. I’d reached behind her to shut the back door, but I couldn’t bring myself to move away.

She smelled so damn good, my wet dreams condensed into an addictive perfume.

I felt my breath hitch as she looked up at me, her eyes wide and glazed with longing. I wanted to reach out and hold her against me, let my hands rest on the dip of her tiny waist. I wanted to bury my nose against her wild curls, breathing deep. I wanted... I just...

It had been so long since I’d wanted anything. I’d been on autopilot for so long that my mind, my body and my heart were pitched into overdrive by this perfect being.

“Is this your way of torturing me?” she asked when I did nothing but stare down at her.

“What?” My voice was raspy.

She placed a small hand on my chest and although I was fully clothed, I might as well have been naked. I felt the heat of her palm, as though my body was starved for her touch and was trying to draw energy from that little gesture.

“You come so close, but you don’t touch me. I know you want to—the heat in your eyes tells me that. Why do you stop yourself?”

“Because.”

BecauseI was not someone who was in it for the moment—I’ve never been one for short-term entanglements. And this would surely be one of those. I couldn’t imagine having her scent in my bed, my skin, only to have it disappear from my life overnight. I knew what it felt like to wake up, instinctively seeking the warmth and comfort of someone who would never return to my side.

Because she would surely leave my Star once it was safe. And I would have to pick up the pieces. Again. I didn’t think my heart would be able to take such abuse.

“Great, thanks.”

Her tone was cutting as she tried to move aside.

“No.” I placed a hand on the door, trapping her between my body and the wooden frame. “You deserve an explanation.”

She looked at my restraining arm and back at my face, waiting.

I grappled for the right words. “Mating scents can be confusing. It can cloud your brain, make you do things you might not be ready for. Usually, the pull of the mating scent grows stronger as Mates spend time together.” I could feel the flush creeping up my neck as I said the next words. “But because I took your blood in the barn the other day, I feel the call has worsened too quickly. I’m sorry.”

“I’m not.” She said it so softly that I would’ve doubted her words if I hadn’t seen her lips move.

My heart slowed, filling with a rush of affection for this woman. So strong, so potent.

“Ella’s right. Sharing blood is reserved for Mates only. It’s not something casual for Fangers.” My eyes met hers meaningfully.

So beautiful.

Her voice whispered across my mind, sending goose bumps over my body. The fact that she’d thought that the moment our eyes met made my throat close with an odd, overwhelming emotion.

Want you.

My throat clicked as I swallowed.

“There’s just one more thing,” I confessed. Of their own volition, my fingers found a strand of her curls. It twined around my finger effortlessly.

“What?” It took a moment for me to realize she’d spoken out loud. It wasn’t her mental voice echoing in my head.

“I... I think we’ve established the beginnings of a bond.”

“What do you mean?” I doubted she knew that she’d subconsciously tilted her head towards the heat of my palm.

“I’m catching some of your thoughts, your feelings.”
