“It’s complicated,” I told Trent, pleading with him through my eyes to just try to understand.

“Complicated?” Trent growled. “Bailey, are you fucking kidding me right now?”

“He does it, too,” I blurted. Trent narrowed his eyes at me. I swallowed thickly, tears burning in my eyes as I focused on Trent’s arms where his white scars were visible against his sun-tanned skin. “He hurts himself, too.”

Trent’s face fell. Suddenly, he understood. It was clear in his eyes.

He sighed and sat beside me on the couch, wrapping an arm around my shoulder as I burst into tears. “I almost lost you that day,” I cried against his chest, letting out everything I’d relived when I’d seen the scars and wounds Seth carried. “I just want to save him before he kills himself.”

“I’m guessing he choked you as a warning to keep your mouth shut,” Trent said quietly. And I hated that he understood that motive. Because it was another reminder that Trent had gone through this and barely survived it.

I sniffled and nodded. Trent sighed, wrapping his other arm around me, hugging me to him. “Just be careful, sis. This kind of shit is toxic. I want to warn you against this; I really fucking do, but I know nothing I say to you will turn you away from this.” He pressed a kiss to the top of my head. “Just be careful. And come to me if something happens again, yeah? No matter your feelings on the situation, I’m not standing by while some asshole fucking hurts you.”
