Mistakes

Blake

Cursingmyselfformy stupidity the entire drive back to the pack house made the journey short. I knew I shouldn’t have brought up such a sensitive subject with Kade. He’d suffered at the hands of his father. I’d immediately noticed that Kade had begun calling his dad by his name instead, but rather than keep the conversation light after already going over heavy topics, I pushed based on an observation.

It was none of my business what Kade called his wolf, but my own couldn’t fathom it. There was a deep sense of sympathy there. Beast to beast. They’d both had their struggles, like Kade and I both had. My own experience couldn’t compare to Kade’s. Being born as a male omega into the Hayes pack where omegas were second-class citizens was so far removed to my alpha privilege. I knew that and acknowledged it daily when I spent time around the omegas of my pack.

So why had I pushed?

“Blake?” my brother Chase called out my name as I stalked through the house towards my room. “I thought you were staying with your mate.”

I paused on the stairs. “He said he wasn’t feeling well and wanted to be alone.”

“Are you okay?” He approached and laid a hand on my shoulder. My wolf and I leaned into the touch of our pack mate, our brother.

“I put my foot in it.” I admitted reluctantly.

“What did you do?”

“I don’t want to talk about it because it’s Kade’s business.” Chase gave me an approving smile. “But he’s feeling sensitive about his dad lurking around looking for him and I asked something that I shouldn’t. I’ll apologize and try to make up for it.”

“Still no sign of Rincoln?”

“Nope, and I wish I could tell Kade he was gone for sure.”

“I know. The whole situation sucks. I’d love to meet him.” His voice was filled with sincerity.

“It isn’t safe for him to be at the pack house just now.” I pointed out. I looked around, aware that we were talking about Kade in the open, where anyone could overhear. There seemed to be no one about. So I shrugged it off.

“What about the omega houses? Could he have dinner with us there? It’s the safest place in the compound for another omega.”

I thought that over for a second. “Actually, that’s a pretty great idea. Kade can see firsthand how we’ve tried to make things better for omegas, and you can meet him at the same time.”

“Cool, I’ll go speak to Georgia and let her decide when we can have a big dinner.”

Chase left me to go up to my suite, and I flopped down on the bed. The room felt too big and empty next to my memory of Kade’s little home. Every part of his house was filled with little touches, decorations that reminded me of Kade somehow. We were still getting to know each other, but his place suited what I knew of him. It was homey and comfortable. I had spent little time on improving my suite. It was a place that I slept in and that was about it. My brothers met me in my office or in their rooms. The only person who came in here was one of the beta cleaners and even then, it was so sparse it needed little doing to it.

I took my time and thought about what I wanted to say to make things right with Kade before deciding just to be direct.

Blake: I’m sorry about earlier. I didn’t mean to upset you. Chase would like to meet you. Dinner with the omegas soon?

I’d not pushed on seeing him and stuck to a vague soon. It was probably better that Kade took charge there.

When his reply came, I wondered if he’d been holding his phone ready to text or call me. I wanted to believe that I wasn’t the only one with feelings, that he needed me as much as I did him. Kade was a part of my soul now, as important as my wolf, who loved our omega. His emotions were simpler than mine, not as restrained. I knew I was falling for Kade, but held something back to protect myself.

Kade: Sorry about earlier. Dinner at my place tomorrow? You can stay over if you like.

My heart leapt at his reply and I wished away the hours to be at his side again when he replied again.

Kade: I already miss you. Is that weird?

I tapped out a response without thinking.

Blake: Not weird. I miss you too. Can’t wait to see you.

Kade: I’m going to go sleep now. Goodnight, my mate.

Blake: Dream of me. Sweet dreams, my heart.
