We hung up, and I couldn’t help but smile as I padded back to the bed, slipping in beside Noelle and pulling her into my arms. I wanted to inhale her sweet scent and hold her just so I’d remember that she was real. That she was here.

And on the anniversary of my parent’s death, for once, I didn’t want to black out to not remember. I was still brokenhearted—I probably always would be—but now, all I wanted was to celebrate life instead of mourning their death.

“Morning.” Noelle’s smile was gentle when she looked up at me, eyes groggy with sleep as I relaxed next to her in bed.

“Good morning.”

“How are you feeling?”

“Still sad, but somehow… Knowing you’re here, I feel like I can get through this.”

Noelle leaned up to kiss me on the cheek. “Good. I’m not going anywhere, I promise.”

“Breakfast?” I asked, changing the subject. Noelle nodded. “Want waffles?”

“Oh.” Noelle grinned. “Yes, definitely. You know I always am in the mood for waffles.”

I chuckled, ushering her out of the bed as I pulled the sheets off of us. “I’ll get us a table at our favorite spot. Come on.”
