“I didn’t when we walked in here,” Danni said, exasperated. “Now I’m certain because of all this dancing around everyone is doing. I’m happy to leave now and concentrate all my time and energy on building a case against your client. There are cameras in the alley. Once I finish reviewing the footage,” she bluffed, “maybe your client will be on it shooting Johnston.”

Utter pandemonium broke out. All three lawyers and Hoffman began talking at once.

Hampton silenced everyone. He turned to Danni. “Do you mean to tell me the PD is surveilling its citizens?”

Danni shook her head. “No more answers from me, Counselor, until I get some answers from your client. If he doesn’t want to talk to me, I’ll work on putting the evidence together to get a warrant and we’ll come back with a lot more people.”

Hampton’s eyes narrowed. “Threat—”

“Enough!” Hoffman stood and walked around the desk. “If you think I had something to do with Thomas’s death, you’re wrong.”

“Ira, I strongly recommend you let me handle this.” Hampton didn’t want to give up the spotlight.

“I don’t like the way you’re handling it. You’re making me look guilty, for heaven’s sake.” He stepped toward Danni. “Thomas was a friend; we had a mutual objective. We both believe this city would be better off without militarized police. Therefore, I supported his being the face of forced reform.”

“Forced reform?”

“The only way change will occur is if it’s forced. Protesting forces change. Thomas was a powerful organizer and speaker. I did not kill him. His death put a dent in our efforts.”

“Did he ever indicate he was afraid for his life, or had he received any threats of any kind?”

“The only people he was afraid of were cops. Look there. Not here with his friends.”

“You have your answers, Detective Grace.” Hampton reasserted himself. “This ends now.”
