CHAPTER ONE

Simmi

I close my eyes and roll my head back. Delicate fingertips of sea spray stroke my cheeks and my toes curl and dig into the warm granules of beach sand. God, I love my home.

I inhale the warm salty air and imagine all my stress exiting my body on my exhale. It’s been a long Saturday and I’m hanging on by a thread.

“Simmi! You made it.”

Max, the owner of our local Bodega and my favorite beachside café, jumps up from the log she’d perched on. Her lanky arms and earthy scent wrap around me and her waist length dreadlocks, tied up in a messy heap on her head, slap me in my face. She leans back. A pair of hawkish eyes considers me, and I plaster my best fake grin across my face.

“You know I can see right through your act. What’s eating you?”

She pinches my chin in her bony, ring-laden fingers.

Her words recall a night I really need to forget. My nipples spontaneously harden and that space between my legs… My thighs flex and I break out in a cold sweat.

A cheeky expression unfolds on Max’s face. “Oooh…”

I hold up my hand. “No.” I shake my head.

She shrugs. “Fine, who am I to judge?”

She takes my hand in hers.

“I’ve got just the thing.”

She leads me toward a hole in the sand filled with ice and unlabeled bottles.

“You have to try my new homemade brew, babe!”

Max hands me a chilled brown glass bottle. I eye it for a moment. I’m wary of it, having treated too many cases of alcohol poisoning over the years.

“Relax.” She flips the cork. “It’s less alcohol than the piss ya buy in the bottle shop, Love. I don’t want my customers ending up in the hospital.”

She winks, and I take the bottle from her.

“Bottoms up.” I raise the beer, place the bottle on my lips, throw back my head, and drink.

A spicy bright zing hits my tongue and washes down my throat, clearing all the muddled-up emotions and unspoken thoughts I’m fighting to hide inside of me.

“This is good,” I say, before wiping the back of my hand across my mouth.

“Yeah, it’s my…”

Max’s voice fades into the background when I hear one bloke call out, “Doc! Happy you decided to join us.”

I turn, and our gazes lock. Every nerve in my body goes off like fireworks on New Year’s.

Fuck!

Dressed in boardies, a sleeveless, sea green t-shirt that matches his eyes, and arms that put Thor to shame, is my boss. The one man on this planet whose effect on me runs deeper than a cosmic shift, and the epitome of every human’s, I wanna fuck you.

A pool of bile burns my insides when I notice men and women turning their attention on him. I don’t want to hate, but I do. I ignore the inner growl that says Mine!

Doctor Jason Hill, or Jay as he likes to be called, towers over everyone. His Viking stature is taut, toned, and bulges in all the right places. He’s tied his honey brown locks in a bun, and the last rays of sun highlight the bronze in his facial hair.

Jay is the reason the last three months of my life have been anything but uncomplicated. He is also the reason I’ve broken my golden rule.
