“Hey, you two want to get out of here?” I asked. Both nodded and stood, and as we walked through the house toward the front door, Ginny caught up to me.

“Hollis, I’m sorry. I just have to be someone different with them. You absolutely don’t look like a typical high school kid. I needed to have the older crowd.”

Was this a breakup? It kind of felt like a breakup. At least, this is what breakups looked like on TV.

“It’s fine. Whatever you need to do. Give me a call when you’re ready to be yourself.” I unlocked the SUV so Patrick and Brittney could get in. I heard one of my doors open and close, but I didn’t turn around to look at them.

“You’ll understand what it’s like when you start fighting with TCF. You’re going to have to be all these different people.”

“No, I won’t.”

I turned and walked toward my SUV and almost bumped into Patrick. He’d been right there and had my back.
