“You can work out less and come see me more.”

I let go of her and leaned back so I could look into her eyes.

“What? Don’t look at me like you’ve never thought about trying them,” she said.

“Ginny, no, I haven’t.”

“You can try it once. Maybe try this fall during football.”

“No. That’s cheating.”

“With all the legalities and being a minor, they can’t just randomly test you.”

“Testing or not, that’s cheating.”

“I know, Hollis. I’m just kidding.” Whew. “But we’re seriously going to have to work out a better schedule because I miss having your warm cum in my ass.” She kissed my chest and leaned her head against it again.

We got dressed and then went downstairs for the party. With a bottle of water in my hand, I stood beside Ginny while she talked to her friends. I looked around, trying to spot Patrick, and realized a lot of these people looked way too old to be in college. I bet she knew most of these people from her parents; both were in the film industry, and elbow rubbing was important. Ginny played the Hollywood game of laughing along and sipping from her red plastic cup. I’d nonchalantly taken the cup out of her hand and set it on the table behind me, but she’d either picked it back up or had taken another one from a friend. I kissed her ear and held her head against my mouth.

“Stop drinking, baby,” I murmured so no one would hear. She swatted me away, but I didn’t budge. “Ginny, you’re nineteen,” I reminded her.

“It’s the thing to do in Hollywood.”

“We’re in Malibu.”

“Stop, Hollis. I need to fit in.”

“No, you don’t.”

“Hollis, I already quit Pepperdine.”

“What?”

“I’m not the college type. I hated it.”

I was surprised by the news because even though we hadn’t been able to see one another much, we still talked on the phone each night.

“This might have been something you could have told me.”

“You’re too busy with TCF, and I didn’t want to stress you out.” I scrubbed my face with my hand and then stared at her. “I need to fit in.”

“No, you don’t. You fit in just fine with me.”

“I need to fit in with them.”

“Not if that means drinking. That could lead to a lot of bad decisions.”

“Not everyone has their life planned out perfectly like you do,” she said through gritted teeth. “Everyone is drinking.”

I looked around and saw lots of people with bottles of beer in their hands or red plastic cups. Patrick and Brittney were sitting together by the pool, but neither of them had liquor around them. I was a bit surprised because Brittney talked up drinking on the way over to the party. She was talking to Patrick, but they weren’t near anyone else. I could tell they felt like they didn’t belong. And this wasn’t where I belonged either.

“They’re not.” I gestured to Patrick and Brittney. “And I’m not.”

“Hollis, don’t embarrass me. Just hold a beer.”

“No. I’m going to head home.” I leaned in to kiss her, and she moved away from me. “Okay, fine,” I said and set my bottle of water on the table.

I walked away from Ginny and went toward Patrick and Brittney. Both of them looked up at me as I approached.
