Patrick and I laughed, and since I was sure he was doing better now, I playfully shoved him back toward the mattress. As he fluffed his pillow and got situated to go back to sleep, I grabbed one of the extra pillows from my bed and turned to face him.

“Move over,” I told him.

He cocked his head to the side and frowned.

“I’ll sit with you until you fall asleep.”

“What? No, it’s okay. You don’t have to. You need some sleep, Hollis.”

“I do, and so do you. So, move it.”

Patrick moved toward the middle of the bed and rested his head on the pillow while on his side. I propped a few pillows against the headboard and leaned against it. Without a word, he pulled his pillow closer to mine, pulled his legs up closer, and closed his eyes. I smiled because I knew he felt safe with me and he trusted me.

I draped my arm over his head so I could set my hand against his back. When I looked at his face again to make sure he was okay with this, I saw a hint of a smile on his lips. I gently moved my hand back and forth against his upper back, just like my parents would do for me when I was little and hadn’t felt good. I had a feeling this was something Patrick never had in his life… Comfort.
