Darin whistles. “Wow. I’m impressed. You usually refrain from getting involved in things.”

“Now wait a minute. I punched that asshole that was picking on that small dude in the bar because he wouldn’t knock his shit off.”

Darin holds up a hand. “Yeah, but that was two dudes. A woman wasn’t involved.”

I scratch my neck, then pull my shirt away from my torso, uncomfortable as hell by my best friend’s piercing stare.

Sighing, I shake my head, then run my fingers through my hair. Leaning back into his couch cushions, I say, “The dude was screaming at her like a maniac. What was I supposed to do, let him beat the shit out of that beautiful woman? Or rape her or something?” My voice rumbles through my chest.

A slow smile crosses Darin’s face. “Ahh… so she’s beautiful, huh?” He nods, watching me. A smirk pulls his lips up. ”Howpretty is this girl?”

“That’s not the fuckingpoint, man.” I turn away, looking at the TV. “He was going to hurt her. There was something really… off about the dude. The vibe he was giving… it was like predator and prey. And he was torturing her, playing with her before whatever madness he planned to unleash…”

Darin settles back in his chair. “Poetic, dude.”

I give him a sharp look, getting fucking pissed at how blasé he’s treating this. “Look—”

Darin starts laughing and I stop shouting, my blood boiling, staring at him. My nostrils flare as I watch him.

“Max, stop. Okay, first, I have no doubt this situation was ugly, and you did the right thing, saving this girl. Two…” he leans forward, green eyes intense. “There’s a helluva lot more to this story than you are telling me. Because I fuckingknowyou, dude. You’ve sworn off women. We were just talking about that earlier.” He holds up a finger. “And I know for a fact, without you saying a damned word, that you didn’t let this girl walk alone to her car after you…” he pauses, brows wrinkling. “Wait, how far did the altercation go?”

I shake my head. “No, he backed off. I threatened to kick his ass, and he knew I was serious. For a minute, the pussy looked scared before his arrogance popped back up. Smug bastard.” Gritting my teeth, I lean forward, grabbing my beer.

Darin chuckles again and I take a drink, my eyes on the TV.

This bastard might get punched tonight if he doesn’t knock his shit off.

“Oh, Max, my boy.” My gaze flits to him as he wipes his eyes. “You should see how pissed you look right now.” He shakes his head. “Seriously, man. Just answer a few questions and I’ll let it drop. Okay?”

My brows furrow, and I stare at him menacingly. “Fine. But all talk of this ends after your last question or I’m punching you. In the nuts.”

Darin lets out a loud chuckle, not in the least bit scared. “Deal.”

I nod. “Fine.”

“Did you walk her to her vehicle?”

“Of course, I did. I had no idea where that crazy asshole went. And it’s a good thing I did. His car was in the lot, and when we left, he was staring at her.”

I close my eyes.Fuck.

Taking a deep breath, I open them, annoyance in my gaze as I stare at him.Maybe I’d feel better if I just got up and punched him in the balls right now.

Darin’s smile widens. “Okay. Did you follow her home?”

“Yes, but her roommate is out of town, and when she told me she’d be home alone… You know that arrogant bastard, sitting in his fucking Beamer, would have followed her home. God knows what he would have done.” My hand scrapes through my hair.

“Did you go inside her apartment?” His eyes are sparkling, and he can barely stop the laugh from escaping, even when he covers his mouth with his hand.

“Yes, she was scared. I went inside and checked to make sure everything was secure.”

Darin’s eyebrows raise, and he lowers his hand from his mouth. “Did you kiss her?”

“No,asshole.” My hands clenched into fists.

“But you wanted to?” He leans forward.

I swear this motherfucker is irritating the shit outta me tonight. Why the hell am I friends with him?
