Chapter thirty

Irelynn

August28,2018,7:30a.m.

I should be exhausted, but I’m filled with endless energy. Flashes of yesterday and early this morning roll through my head as I sit at the table in the apartment I share with Vanessa.

Letting out a sigh of contentment, my eyes flit to Vanessa, who shakes her head and rolls her eyes, grabbing a bagel from the toaster. “He must be fucking fantastic in bed. You are not a morning person. Let alone a bundle of pure joy and happiness this early in the morning.” She takes a bite of her bagel, studying my face.

“Damn, Vanessa, I’ve never been with anyone even half as good in bed as he is.” I prop my head in my hand, my eyes glazing over as I stare out the window, thinking of him. Missing him already. “Maybe I should take donuts and coffee to Darin’s garage,” Instantly, I perk up at the thought.

Vanessa slides into the chair across from me, causing me to look up. “I’d let him get some work done before you do. Lord knows he won’t get nothing done the second he lays eyes on you.”

I sigh, drumming my fingers on the table. “True.” Disappointment crashes through me at the thought of having to wait to see him.

What the hell am I going to do in the meantime?

Vanessa finishes her bagel and grabs a mug, pouring coffee into it. “I need to head to class.” She takes a sip, her eyes on me. “If you fuck him in Darin’s garage, you better make sure Darin isn’t there. You’re so loud when you are with Max.”

I spit my water out on the table, laughing. “How do you know? You weren’t around us last night.” I dab my napkin over my lips.

“I was here when you made out with him and that was bad enough. I can only imagine what it’s like when you have sex with him.” She shakes her head, covering her ears with her hands.

I throw my napkin at her, laughing. “You’re ridiculous. I’m not that loud.”

She gives me a look. “Does Max have neighbors?”

I raise my brows. “Yeah. So?”

“I’d avoid them if I were you.” She winks and I laugh, throwing my water bottle cap at her. She dodges it, laughing. “I’m just sayin’, Irelynn.”

“Whatever. Go to class, Vanessa.” I wave a dismissive hand at her.

“I’m sure you’ll be with him tonight. But text me and let me know for sure.”

I nod, looking at my phone as it beeps. As I’m reading Max’s message, fear travels up my spine.

I’ve been so absorbed in Max that I’ve forgotten about William.

“Vanessa, Max is asking if it’s okay for me to give him your number so he can text you to coordinate things this week.” I look up at her, my mood dimming at the mention of William’s name.

“Sure, that’s a great idea. Yup, give him my number and tell him to text me so I know who he is.” She pauses and gives me a wink. “Feel free to tell him he can give Darin my number.”

I shake my head as my fingers move over my phone, responding to Max. When I’m finished, I study her. “You don’t even know what Darin looks like.”

“If he’s Max’s best friend and boss, I’m sure he’s good-looking. And nice. Max wouldn’t be hanging out with an asshole.”

“True.” I grin as an idea comes to mind. “How about I take donuts and coffee to them and sneak a picture of him? I’ll text it to you.”

“This is why you are my best friend.” She grins wickedly. “Your devious mind. I love that idea.” She bounces over, kissing me on the cheek. “You’re the best, girl.”

“Don’t you forget it.” I grin, waving goodbye to her.

After she leaves, the silence of the apartment, along with my restless mood, causes me to pace the floor. I have too much energy to study, so that’s out. I should be exhausted, but I’m not. I’d rather see Max than take a nap. But Vanessa said I need to let him get some work done, which I probably should.

Tapping my finger against my chin, I pace to my bedroom, trying to find something to do. As my eyes fall on my open closet door, my running tights call to me. My brows furrow. I really shouldn’t go alone.

Surely, a quick run in the woods this early in the morning would be safe.
