My anger dissipates. Yeah, Monica can suck it. And I would say as much if I weren’t so fixated on something Rigger said a second ago. “So, what’s this whole ‘you’re gonna need me and I won’t be here’ bit?”

He lifts his glass and downs a huge gulp, licking his lips afterwards. When he picks up a chip and dunks it in the cheese, I hold up my hands, growing impatient.

“I think I know where King is.” Rigger shoves the chip into his mouth.

“What? Where?” My ears start to ring. I wait for him to finish chewing and tell me more but he doesn’t.

Palms sweating, I pick up a napkin, twist it in a circle. “Are you going to leave me hanging?”

“Yes. I can’t say any more than that.”

“The fuck? Why not?” I scrunch the napkin in my grip, wondering how the hell he can have this knowledge and not share it. He wasn’t even supposed to be looking for King.

“It’s complicated. I can’t tell you. Not here. Not right now. And this information is highly classified. One hundred and ten percent confidential.”

“Oh my god,” I groan, burying my face in my hands.

“The authorities know—one of the men at the office told me—but they’re waiting on a search warrant. Just a few details to get some evidence together, make certain they’ve got the right guy.”

“Oh … wait. Ben told me that. Just yesterday.”

“Ben?” Rigger narrows his eyes.

“Yeah. We’ve been spending time together.”

His forehead vein pulses, jaw hitching to the side. “Alright. So what does he know about all this?”

“He knows someone at the Phoenix P.D. And they told him they had a lead. But that’s all he knows.”

The way he nods at me with anger flaring in his eyes makes me realize that nothing has changed as far as his opinion of Ben.

“You still don’t like him, huh?”

“Not really.”

“Okay then. Be honest. Is it jealousy? Or do you have a valid reason to not like him.”

“A valid reason. He’s going to hurt you. It’s not a matter ofif, butwhen. I think you’re better off cutting ties with him and coming with me to Guam.”

“If you want me going with you to Guam and he wants me to stay here with him—which I’m certain he does—what makes your motives any different than his?”

Rigger smiles a tight smile, leaning forward. “Because, Vay. When I ask you to do something it’s out of concern for you. Not my dick.”

I pull a face, shake my head. “You must think I’m really shallow.”

“On the contrary.”

“Then why are you so sure he couldn’t possibly be interested in me as a person? I am more than what’s between my legs, Rig.”

“I’m well aware of that. I’m just not so sure he is.”

“You haven’t even met him,” I snap, grabbing a chip from the basket and angrily dipping it in cheese about a dozen times while Rigger watches me.

He puts a hand on mine and I stop. “I know more than you think I do, Tove. And if I hadn’t fucked it up by kissing you, you’d still believe in me. I wouldn’t have to convince you that your heart is in danger.”

“Everyone’s heart is in danger when they fall in love, you idiot. I know that even if you don’t, seeing as you never could commit to Holly. Who knows if you even loved her. She should be the one warning me here, to stay away fromyou. Mr.I-refuse-to-be-monogamous.” I bark out the title, making harsh marching movements with my arms and slinging cheese all over the table.

Rigger just quirks his eyebrows at me then slams back a hit of his drink as I shove the cheese-coated chip past my lips. I’m not even sure why he’s still here. I’m being so hostile I’m starting to annoy myself.
