Chills pass through me. He’s been right under my nose this whole time and I never knew. “Shit. Alright. I’ll stay at Daddy’s tonight. He’s out of town and I’m sure Greer could use the company. We’ve got the alarm system and the gate there. I can take Ritz and hang out there until it’s all over.”

Rigger pinches the bridge of his nose so I can tell that this isn’t placating him at all. But I know what will happen if I stay with him. Putting myself in Ben’s shoes, I don’t think I would like him hanging out with another girl who didn’t like me, who kissed him not that long ago, who clearly wants to be with him. Staying at Daddy’s instead of Rigger’s is the right thing to do.

“Your dad is out of town? Where is he?”

“He’s in Stockholm dealing with an emergency. In fact, he was supposed to have called me by now.” I check my phone to see if I’ve missed a call from him but it’s empty of notifications. Even from Ben.

“When’s he coming back?”

“Hopefully before Thanksgiving. But he’s not sure. I wonder if he knows.”

“Knows?”

“About King. I mean, he must, right?”

“He betternotknow. And you cannot tell him.”

“You’re joking.”

He’s not. I can tell by the tone of his voice, the fire in his eyes.

“Do I joke about this shit?” he scoffs. “I’m risking my job by telling you this. I know you’re close with your dad but you cannot breathe a word. Not to him. Not to anyone. Is that clear?”

“Crystal.”

“I mean it.”

“I believe you.”

The way he licks his lips and his gaze lingers on me, I wonder if he’s having doubts that I do believe him. But even after what’s happened between us, I wouldn’t betray his confidence.

“Good. I’d like to come by your dad’s house and check on you later tonight. If you don’t mind.”

“I guess.”

“You won’t even know I’m there. Except to open the gate for me. I’ll just do a walk around the property and make sure it’s sound.”

It’s really hard to be mad at him right now. Not when he’s acting like this. “I’m sure Daddy would appreciate that. I can have Ben do it if you have plans. I know Thursday is your guys’ night.”

“That’s not a priority right now. I just need you to promise me one thing.”

Hesitancy tightens inside of me. “I’ll try.”

Rigger looks around the bar for a moment, then points his gaze at me like a loaded gun. “When I tell you to run, you run. You get in your car and head north on the 17. Don’t stop until I tell you.”

“Okay. Those don’t sound like the words of someone who doesn’t think I’m in danger.”

“This isn’t aboutyoubeing in danger,” Rigger says, shaking his head. “I just need you to promise me, okay? You know I’ve never steered you wrong.”

I can’t argue with him on that one. “Okay. I promise.”

Rigger accompanies me to my car not long after our conversation. I feel Monica’s stare on us the whole time we’re walking out but Rigger doesn’t even acknowledge her with a sideways glance.

“I’m meeting my sibling tomorrow. Greer is going with me. Just thought you might want to know.”

“Really? Where? What time?”

“Nine, at the Hyatt.”
