“Oh, you and Troy are doing good?”

“It’s a work in progress, but things are getting better.”

“I’m happy to hear your relationships with your kids are good now.” She smiles.

“Why do you say that?”

“Honestly, I never thought this would ever happen.” She shrugs.

“Thanks for being so positive about it,” I say sarcastically. “Here, I thought you were positive twenty-four-seven.”

She looks into my eyes and says softly, “I thought we would be burying you by now, but I’m so glad you called me. You could have easily ignored me when you needed help, but you didn’t. I’m glad I was able to help you get into rehab.” She wipes a stray tear from her cheek.

“Thank you. I’m glad you didn’t turn your back on me that day, you easily could have, but you didn’t. I’m glad I was given that chance to get clean . . .” My voice cracks. Grown-ass man getting emotional. “So, when do you want to leave?” I ask, changing the subject.

“I don’t care, as long as you’re sure the cat will be taken care of.”

“Pack a bag. We’re heading to the airport right now.”

“Now?”

“Yes, I’ll call Troy to come over and get the key so he can check on your cat. Then we are out of here.”

“Okay.” She smiles.

I make the call, but Troy can’t be over for a little bit, so I find a place to hide the key and text him with the location. My bag that I’d brought over the other day is still packed. I head to the bedroom to get it and notice Sunny is almost ready.

“Let’s go, babe.”

We head out the door, ready to get out of here for a few days.

CHAPTERNINE

SUNNY

I don’t know how Ice got all of this worked out, but I’m glad he did. I needed a break from work, but I wouldn’t admit it. With patients dying and Dallas’ threats, it’s too much. As we arrive in Birmingham, excitement fills my gut. I haven’t seen Zeus in a long time, about 20 years.

He is waiting for us when we get out of the airport. I see him, and he looks the same but now has salt and pepper hair and has put on some weight but in a good way.

“Well, I’ll be damned. You actually showed up.” Zeus smiles from ear to ear. I know he’s excited to see his brother.

“I told you I would,” Ice says as he hugs him.

“Sunny, you’re a sight for sore eyes,” he says, pulling me in for a hug.

“It’s good to see you too.”

“You know you’re the best woman Ice was ever with, and he fucked up by not lockin’ you down back in the day,” he says to me but stares at Ice.

“I know, and I’m not gonna make the same mistake again.” My eyes shoot to him, and mine and Ice’s eyes lock.

“Let’s get you to the club and get you something to eat.”

Ice helps me into the back of the truck, and it feels like old times, except Ice is straight and alive.

When we arrive at the club, it’s late, so we have a late dinner. Then we chat with some people in the club. A lot has changed, but it’s all good.

A clubhouse party starts, but I think Ice has other plans. He grabs my hand and leads me back to the bedroom we’re sleeping in. Ice opens the door and shuts it behind me, locking it.
