Marjorie and I planned to get together today after stressful shifts at work. I love working with Marjorie so much. I value her as a co-worker and a friend. There is a coffee shop that’s within walking distance from both of our places, so we decide to meet there for lunch.

The day is gorgeous, and I’m so excited to be off and outside to enjoy the weather. I leave my apartment and make the fifteen-minute walk to the café. It’s a little busy when I walk in, but hopefully, by the time Marjorie arrives, the crowd will have thinned.

I’m able to get us a table outside, and I sit and look over the menu as I wait for her to arrive. Five minutes later, she’s sitting down on the opposite side of the table.

“Sorry, I’m running behind. Someone called in, and I had to find coverage. Sounds like the flu could be going around.” She sighs.

“Ew, keep those bugs away from our unit.”

“Exactly! Luckily, I was able to find someone to cover because I almost had to cancel our lunch and work myself.”

“I’m glad you didn’t have to. You need a break too.” I smile. She works way too much.

“Me too. It’s nice to sit down and talk to you without machines beeping and alarms cutting us off.”

“Agreed.”

The server comes and takes our orders, and we continue our conversation.

“So, how’s Mr. Biker hottie?” she smirks.

“He’s fine. We’ve been spending a lot of time together, and it’s been really good. He’s changed for the good, and I’m glad that he’s in my life.”

“That’s good to hear. I like when things come back together.”

“I never expected it, so it’s a surprise to me too. A nice surprise that I get to enjoy.” I smile because it’s like a dream come true.

“What about you? Anyone special in your life?”

“No, work keeps me too busy for that. Maybe one day everything will align, and I’ll find an amazing man to sweep me off my feet,” she dramatically states, and we both start laughing.

“I hope it works out for you that way.”

The server delivers our food, and we go back to talking, but I feel eyes on me. I look around, trying to figure out who might be watching me, but I don’t see anyone.

“What’s wrong? Do you see someone you know?”

“No, it’s nothing. Something just feels off, but it’s nothing big.” I try to play it cool.

After fifteen minutes, I can’t stand it anymore. The feeling is making me jumpy and feels unsafe. I look at my phone, and I know Ice said he had things to take care of this morning, so I don’t want to bug him. I could just leave here in a few and walk home.

“Marjorie, lunch is on me, but I’m going to leave. This feeling isn’t leaving me, and I think I just need to be at home.”

“Do you want me to walk with you?”

“You don’t have to. I’ll be fine because I’m sure it’s my mind working overtime.”

“Are you sure, Sunny?”

“Yes, I’m sure.” I wave down the server and give her my card to pay. “When I get home, I think I’m going to take a nap.”

“That sounds like an amazing idea.”

The server returns with my card. I sign their copy and leave it on the table. “I’ll see you in a few days bright and early.”

“Stay safe, and if you need anything, call.”

“I will. Bye.”
