Page 20 of Only For Him

She wanted to tell him to go away. She knew she looked a mess after the late night and restless sleep. Since he’d spent the night in her bed, Addy hadn’t slept well. She was itchy from the inside out. But, as a burst of cold air shifted over her, it brought the aroma of doughy sweetness. Addy just couldn’t resist.

“Come on.”

She turned and left him at that door. She heard the door shut behind her. Without turning around, she said, “Be right back. Make yourself at home.”

She didn’t even try to hide the sarcasm in her voice. She thought she heard him chuckle.

After relieving herself and brushing her teeth and hair, she headed back into the kitchen. He’d set everything out on her little table and waited for her. He should have looked out of place in her tiny kitchen, but just like that night two weeks earlier, he looked perfect.

“What?”

She shook her head. “Nothing.”

Addy knew she couldn’t tell him exactly what she was thinking. Knowing him, he would use it to get in her bed.

She sat down and frowned as he set a cream-filled donut in front of her.

“It’s got Bavarian cream.”

Her favorite. “Maybe I don’t like this kind.”

“Your father said it was your favorite.”

Of course, he did. Her father was cheering on Vic from the sidelines. He hadn’t been overt about his support of Vic, but she knew he was helping.

She bit into the donut and tried to ignore the big hunk of man sitting next to her. It wasn’t easy. He had been in her mind too much lately, especially at night.

The sugar slid over her taste buds, and she sighed.

“I take that as a thank you.”

She looked at him out of the corner of her eye. “Thank you.”

He smiled at her, one of those rare full smiles showing his dimples. In that instant, he looked so much younger.

“What?” he asked when she said nothing.

“Nothing. Just…” Then she noticed the dark circles under his eyes. “You look tired.”

He sighed, and his smile faded. “Been busy at work.”

“Yeah, Dad said you two were working a case together.”

She hadn’t asked and wouldn’t. She knew that some things were better not discussed.

“And you took time out to bring me something to eat? That was awfully sweet of you.”

He nodded and looked down at his coffee cup. A light stain of red spread up his cheeks, and she realized he was blushing. Vic was a sexy man, and he was irresistible when he flirted. When he blushed like a little schoolboy…damn, that could send her head first into a pile of lust and love for the man.

“So, you decided it was a good deal to come wake me up on a Sunday morning?”

“I knew you worked late last night, so you would be…alone.”

It took her a second to figure out what he was talking about. “You’ve been worried about me finding someone else.”

“No. Well, not really.”

Irritation spread through her. “You think I sleep around a lot?”
