He shook his head.

“She’s the one you let into the club that night with her friend, right? The one that eventually married Dupree?”

“Yes.”

“Are you planning on breaking any other rules for her?”

Vic shrugged because he wasn’t sure. When he’d laid down the gauntlet to her, he was getting very impatient. The time they were spending together was making it more complicated by the day. He sighed.

“You really are.”

“Not sure. There’s something…just something about her.”

He sensed Justin’s nod. “I understand. Just make sure that you don’t compromise on things you need.”

Vic was worried that he might just do that if she said no.

When she tookthe last bite of pasta, Addison sighed.

“I take it you liked the meal?”

She looked at Vic and swallowed the rest of her food. “Of course, I did. You cook like a chef. Where did you learn?”

He sipped his wine and shrugged. “When Justin and I were living together after getting out of the Army, I got sick of canned soup, ramen, and fast food. Justin wasn’t going to learn to cook, so I did it.”

Of course, he did. “I have a feeling your plan is to get me fed. You always seem to show up with food.”

“I couldn’t send you flowers.”

“Why not?”

He snorted. “I’ve seen that competitive streak in you, Addison. You might deal with flowers, but you aren’t that different than your father. You’d tear me a new one if I used another florist.”

She smiled. “You think you know me so well?”

“I know you a bit more than you know me.”

“So, tell me. Why did you become a lawyer? From what Dad says, you could have easily gotten into Officer School or whatever they call it and be a general.”

“After four years, I was ready to get out.”

“I think you would be geared toward military life.”

He shook his head. “No. I hated the idea of moving around so much. I did a lot of that as a child.”

“Oh, I envy you. We made trips, but to be somewhere else, where no one knew who you were… kind of a fantasy of mine.”

“Leave DC?”

Was there a hint of panic in his voice? “Well, I can’t because of the job, but if Amanda decided to stay over there, I would happily move our shop there.”

“To Hawaii? You would leave your father?”

She sighed. “Probably not, even though he’d probably encourage me. I couldn’t leave him.”

“You make him sound kind of sad.”

“Don’t you think he is? He’s a man who loved one woman in life and spends all his nights alone in his empty house.”
