“What the hell for?”

“I’m assuming you want me to be your best man. Now, don’t hurt my feelings, Vic, and say no. I might cry.”

Best man. Married.

Vic hadn’t really thought about it, but the idea took form when Justin said it. Okay, he had thought about it, but nothing definite. Every time it had been suggested in his life, he panicked. He’d been in the military. Then, he attended law school and built his career. Thinking of Addy in his house, his life, and his bed forever was enough to make him smile.

“Oh, shit, I was just kidding. Don’t tell me you’rethatserious with her,” Justin said.

“I think I might be. But then, think of it this way: you have a better chance at snagging a woman if I’m off the market.”

“Fuck you.”

“See, even the men want me.”

Justin laughed. “You remember this when she’s driving you crazy with what flower you want here or there for the wedding. I’m meeting with the IT folks I have working on this tomorrow. Do you think you can sit in?”

Vic pulled up his calendar on the computer and nodded. “Nothing tomorrow afternoon.”

“Now, how did you know it was afternoon?”

“Boy, I know better than to think you set an appointment before noon.”

Justin stood and walked to the door, then paused, looking back over his shoulder. “You know, at some point, you’ll have to go all the way with her.”

He didn’t ask Justin how he knew Vic had been going slowly with Addy. The two of them had an uncanny way of knowing what the other was thinking. That’s what came with serving in the military together.

Vic nodded but said nothing. Justin returned the gesture, then slipped out the door.

Vic knew he needed to work on reviewing the deposition, but he couldn’t seem to focus. That was wrong. He could only think about the woman who had been his focus for so long he couldn’t remember a time without her.

Why had he been so slow with Addison? He knew she would be up for a lot of what he had planned, but there was a tiny part of him savoring it. Maybe somewhere in the back of his mind, he wanted to take his time because it would be his last submission.

Still, he needed to take that next step…and knew precisely what he wanted to do.

Addy practically dancedup the walk to her house. It had been an excellent day at the store. While they were still going to have a few chilly days, winter finally felt like it was leaving. When the first stirrings hit DC, people went crazy for fresh flowers. She had booked three weddings in the last two days too. And, to top it all off, Vic’s car was parked next to the curb. That made her happiest of all.

The last week had been a new experience. For the first time in her adult life, she wasn’t panicking. By this time in the relationship, she was trying to come up with reasons not to stick around. It struck her that she hadn’t once tried to come up with a reason to run in the other direction.

She laughed and opened the front door.

“Vic!” she called out.

He walked out of the kitchen, smiling at her with wine glasses in his hands. He walked to her, offering her that grin that always made her heart go soft, and right then and there, she realized she loved him. Not just a little in love. Knock her on her ass, kind of falling in love.

Holy shit.

Addy waited for the panic to set in. Nothing. Well, not nothing. Warmth spread through her as her head spun. Joy burst through her as she took the glass he held.

“Should I be worried about that look?” he asked, his voice equal parts worry and amusement.

“Nope. I had a spectacular day.” She tasted the wine and sighed. Of course, it was her favorite white to drink. “Did you go to Wegman’s without me? That’s mean.”

He smiled, but he ignored her question. “So, what made your day so spectacular?”

“Got a few bookings, sold a lot of flowers, and then I come home to you. Can’t get much better than that.”

He took her by the hand and tugged her toward her room. “I hope you feel the same way in just a few minutes.”
