His last mission in the military had been the biggest of clusterfucks, including one of the team going off the rails who fired his gun at others on the team. Vic had had no choice but to shoot the man.

“What do you want?”

“Retribution. You killed my boy.”

“If your boy had been a man, maybe he wouldn’t have gone after us for money.”

And it was the one thing that they found out later. Stan Bartlett had sold the team out to a warlord. The one thing he could never forgive the bastard for. He understood the fear but selling out your teammates was beyond forgiveness.

“You coward. You hide behind lies. Well, no more.”

“Is that so?” Vic asked, trying to keep himself calm. Bartlett’s duplicity also unveiled just how batshit crazy he was. It was apparently a family trait.

“That little filly you’ve been hanging around with lately should be more careful about what she does.”

His heart dropped to his stomach. Fear rose up and almost choked him. He couldn’t know about Addison, could he?

Then...rage roared to life. The idea that Bartlett would even dare to mention Addison had his temper soaring. Vic couldn’t let Bartlett know how angry he was. If he did, he would go after Addison. That was something Vic would not be able to deal with.

“What the fuck do you want, Bartlett?”

“I just want you to remember that you are not untouchable, and neither is your cute little florist.”

The line went dead. Vic slammed the phone down. That bastard. It had been years since the incident, and apparently, Stan’s father had been spending that time coming up with reasons why his son died. Vic knew Bartlett thought his son was a patriot, but he’d been the worst. He stood and started to pace, reminding himself that anger wouldn’t get him anywhere. Before he calmed down, Justin walked into his office. Vic stopped pacing and tried to think straight, but the combo of fear and rage had him ready to hunt Bartlett and beat him.

“Hey, what are you doing here so early? I expected you to be here tonight because... isn’t tonight the big night?”

He said nothing as he tried to calm his anger.

“What’s wrong?”

He shook his head and pulled out his cell. He needed to talk to Addy and make sure she was okay. She picked up on the second ring. “Seriously, did you think you needed to bug me again this morning? I need my rest for tonight.”

Her joy was easy to hear, and it soured his stomach. “Just wanted to say good morning.”

“I think you already did that before,” she said with a laugh. He had. He had awakened her with her head between her legs. He didn’t think he would ever get enough of her.

“I’m going to finish my work, then head home.”

“Okay. Seven tonight, right?”

“Yeah.”

He hung up and looked at Justin.

“What the fuck was that about?” Justin asked.

“You know who that man was who was looking for me? Bartlett’s father.”

“Shit.”

“And he knows about Addy.”

“Oh, not good. We need to go over there.”

“No. Bartlett thinks that she’s something special to me. The best thing to do is think this out.”

“No, we need to go over there right now.”
