Page 39 of Only For Him

“And tell her what? Some batshit crazy father whose batshit crazy son I killed is now stalking me? The truth is, I’m not even sure it is him.”

“And why you? He was shot by three of you.”

He sighed. “That means I need to call Collins and Henry. See if they had any dealings with him.”

“Are you sure your reason for not going to Addy right now is that you don’t want her to know about what you did in the military?”

“No.”

“Yeah? Well, just a little hint here, you idiot. She probably knows.”

He knew the way Addy was, she wouldn’t have dealt with him if she’d known, but he didn’t want to argue now. He wanted to research and find out just what the fuck was going on first.

“I’m going to get ahold of those two guys and see what’s up.”

“Just promise me you won’t do something stupid.”

“I won’t. It’ll all work out.”

“Okay. Call after you talk to them.”

When Addy walkedinto Vic’s house later that day, there was a dark feeling about the place. He hadn’t been at the door to greet her, which was odd. Tonight was the night they were supposed to go to the club, so she had expected him to be ready. But she had let herself in. The ominous atmosphere seemed to grow heavier as she walked down the hallway. After checking the kitchen, she wandered into his home office.

He was bent over his desk, a pen in his hand and his reading glasses on. Damn, he looked so freaking attractive when he put those on. She had never been one who went after the head of the class types, but she liked seeing him like this. His dress shirt was rolled up to his elbows, and he looked like

“So, you think you can just say fuck off and leave, and I’ll do that?”

“First of all, Addison, I didn’t say that. I just said that this interlude had served its purpose.”

She blinked as tears burned the back of her eyes. It wasn’t something she expected from him. Sure, he was a man who hadn’t settled down, but he was also a careful man. Very careful.

It was then that she decided it had been planned all along. He didn’t look distraught over her outburst. He appeared bored. As if they were going through the motions of some play they had already seen.

“Interlude?” she asked, her voice hoarse with emotion. Don’t lose your cool in front of him, Addy. Just don’t do it. With every bit of her control, she pulled her emotions in check. “Of course. Is that it?”

For the first time since she’d arrived, he looked surprised. Of course, the look disappeared almost as fast as it appeared. She had some satisfaction, at least. Now, though, it felt hollow. With every bit of her will, she forced her lips to curve into what she hoped was a cruel smile.

“Yes.”

She nodded. “I’ll be going then. I have plans tonight and don’t want to be late.”

“We were supposed to go to the club tonight.”

Oh, now he wanted to get offended. Bastard. “Well, I had a feeling we’d run our course, so I let my friends know.”

He said nothing to that as she turned and walked out of the house. She didn’t cry, didn’t even sob. She felt oddly empty like every emotion had been carved out of her. Thirty minutes later, she walked through her front door, shutting it and locking it behind her. Then, she grabbed her phone and called the one person she knew she could always be honest with.

When she heard Amanda’s voice, the tears came back full force.

“Hey, Addy, I thought you were going to the club tonight.”

“No.”

“You’re crying. What did that bastard do?”

“He told me that our interlude was over. He acted bored.”

Amanda didn’t say anything for a few seconds, then said, “Bullshit.”
