“I swear to God that’s what he said,” she said, embarrassed that she practically sobbed it out. She never cried about men. They were expendable.

“Oh, I’m sure that’s what he said, but he didn’t mean it.”

“I was there. He meant it.”

A long moment of silence over the phone told Addy that Amanda was concocting something. “Where are you now?”

“Home.”

“What do you have on the schedule for next weekend? Do you have any weddings?”

“No.”

“Good. I say you need a Hawaiian trip, and you need to come to see me.”

She was tempted. Oh, so tempted. Running away would be fantastic.

“I can’t just leave.”

“Yeah, you can. If you have to, close up the fucking shop. We work because we like it, not because it defines us. Remember? We promised ourselves that. I’m sure Lindsey can deal with all of the issues that come up.”

Addy knew she was right, but at the moment, she wanted to wallow, preferably with an unending supply of ice cream.

“You are not going to stay in DC and veg out. You’ll come here and do it. Besides, I need someone to help me with baby shopping. Mal is completely horrible with all of it. He has no patience with it.”

She smiled, thinking of the SEAL shopping for a baby. He probably wanted to be in and out of the shops in less than twenty minutes.

“Okay.”

“Tomorrow.”

“That might be too fast.”

“Oh, crap, I forgot how much later it is there. So, how about Monday. Tell your dad you’re coming, and the shop. No one else. Just come.”

It was running away from her problems, but she needed it. She needed calm to deal with losing her heart.

“I’ll look for a flight for Monday and call Lindsey.”

“Good.”

They talked for a bit longer, and then she hung up. She would be in Hawaii in two days, but she was in DC tonight. She wandered through her house, dropping her things as she went, tossing off her shoes, and not paying attention to where they went.

Quickly, she slipped out of the dress she’d bought specifically for that night. All black. Addy wasn’t someone who generally dressed so dark, but she had done it for him for their first time at the club.

She collapsed on her bed in nothing but her panties and then pulled the comforter up over her head. She might be going to Hawaii on Monday, but she was in DC and deserved a good cry tonight.

ChapterTwelve

Monday morning arrived, and Addy had her bags packed. She didn’t want to go. Okay, that was a lie. She’d wanted to go there since Amanda had been married. But a small part of her wanted to stay and wallow. Other people did it, but she knew if she missed her flight, Amanda would throw a massive fit.

The doorbell rang, telling her the cab was there to pick her up. She opened the door, her hand on her bag when she came face to face with a rather tall, brutish-looking man.

“Addison Mahler?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Frank Bartlett, and I think we need to have a chat.”
