Why wouldn’t she smile at him?

Because you’re an asshole who broke her heart, that’s why.

He counted back from ten and got himself back under control.

It took another thirty minutes before he was wheeling her to the elevator.

“Dad said you were in charge of getting me home.”

Her tone let Vic know that she wasn’t happy about the situation. If he didn’t pick up on that, the “bullshit” she muttered under her breath told him how she felt.

He pressed the button and did another count backward from ten. The woman was testing his patience. When she got sassy like she had been that morning, he wanted to lay her over his lap and smack her ass.

And that thought made him feel guilty. The woman was recovering from a concussion—which had been his fault—and he was thinking about spanking her. Of course, his unruly cock hardened when he thought about that. What the hell happened to him? He used to have control over the bastard.

“I don’t understand why he couldn’t be here.”

That pouty tone of hers should piss him off. She’s a grown woman and upset that her daddy isn’t here. Still, he understood. She was still dealing with what happened to her, and he knew that Frederick was a comfort to her. At the worst point in their lives, they had clung together. She needed to understand that he was also there and wasn’t budging.

The valet brought the car around for Vic. When Addison stood, Vic slipped his hands beneath her legs and lifted her.

“Vic,” she said, embarrassment coloring her voice. “My legs work.”

“Just let me do this.”

She sighed and said nothing else. He counted that as a victory.

He had her settled in the seat and her stuff stored in the SUV in just a few minutes, and they were on their way out of the hospital complex.

Before he hit 495, she was already dozing. She didn’t get much sleep last night since they had to keep checking on her. Dr. Brown was happy with her recovery and told them she could sleep normally tonight. That was one thing that gave him peace.

Of course, his plans for her would not make her very happy. Instead, he knew she was going to lose it.

Twenty minutes later, he took the exit to his house, which had her stirring in her seat. She frowned. “This isn’t the way to Dad’s.”

“I never said I was taking you to your father’s house.”

She frowned, crossing her arms beneath her breasts. “I want to go to my father’s house.”

“He doesn’t want you.”

She gasped, and it took all the control he had to keep from laughing. In fact, he had to bite the inside of his cheek.

“He would never say that.”

He didn’t. But he understood that Vic would take care of his daughter. The truth is, if she demanded that he take her to Frederick’s house, he would. But that little comment, there was no real fight in it. Pain, yes, and fear. He understood the fear because he was feeling it himself right now. He was about to lay it all on the line.

Failure was definitely not an option.

We arrived at my house just about five silent minutes later. He really didn’t think she could stay quiet so long. He grabbed the bag and went to help her out of the car. She was still sitting there and refused to budge.

“Addison.”

“Nope. Not happening.”

The last forty-eight hours had been the worst of his life. He didn’t think he would ever get over it. And this woman was pressing all his buttons. He knew he deserved it, but he wasn’t about to talk about it in his garage. He dropped the bag and then undid her seatbelt.

“That was—”
