He didn’t wait for her to finish. Instead, he yanked her from the seat, out of the car, then threw her over his shoulder in a fireman’s hold.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing? My father never agreed to this. He wouldn’t.”

He rolled his eyes as he made his way through the kitchen, up the stairs, to his bedroom.

“If you think something is happening in that bed, you can forget it.”

He set her down on her feet. “I wanted to talk but didn’t want to do it at the hospital or with your father around.”

“You said he knew about this.”

He nodded. Frederick hadn’t been that sure about it, but Vic had promised to bring her right over if she insisted. Of course, she had already, and he would do it if she still felt the same way after they talked.

“Sit.”

“I am not a dog.”

Irritation took hold, and he could no longer control his comments. “Addison, I’m barely holding it together. Sit down before I spank you so hard you won’t be able to sit.”

Her eyes dilated, and he knew then that there was still hope. She sat and waited.

“Hurry up, I don’t have all damned day.”

He chuckled. “You would test the patience of a saint.”

“And you are no saint.”

“You’re right about that.”

“Now, tell me your stupid comments so you can take me to my father’s house.”

She was so annoying, and he loved her more than anyone else.

Fear held his tongue for the first time in a long time. This woman was his whole world, and he had been ready to let her walk out of his life to protect her. Now, if he said the wrong thing, he would lose her forever because of his stupidity.

“I was stupid.”

“Yep. Now can I go?”

“Listen, woman, I’m about to tell you how much I love you. I didn’t want to live without you, and I wanted to die when you walked out of my house. I had to do it to keep you safe, and I didn’t have a choice.”

“You had a choice. You could have treated me like an adult and told me what was happening.”

“I couldn’t.”

“Why not? Do you think that I’m not smart enough to understand?”

“God, no. You’re smarter than most lawyers I know.”

“That’s not saying much considering present company.”

She wasn’t going to make this easy. Not at all. Vic would have to bare his soul to her, but it was one of the things he loved most about her. Just by being who she was, she forced Vic to look at things he didn’t want to deal with. She broke down all his barriers.

“I…” he swallowed and pushed ahead. “You scared me.”

She blinked. “What?”

“You are the most precious thing to me in the world, and losing you would have broken me. I couldn’t have you hurt.”
