“It would be best. I know the family. I have since I was a little girl.”

“Okay great. Let me take care of a few things here.”

“Can you pick me up in an hour? And wear tennis shoes and something you don’t mind getting dirty.”

“Okay. No problem.”

“I’m a little nervous,” she giggles.

“Why?”

She chuckles.

“I’m going to meet your mother.”

God, that’s really cute. Even though I know it has nothing to do with me.

“Don’t be silly. You are doing her a big favor. Besides, she is a perfectly warm woman.”

That is true. Unless you are under her microscope. I leave that bit out.

“Okay, I feel better. Now, about that kissing business you mentioned?”

“Yes.”

“Let’s do it. Soon.”

She disconnects, leaving me on the edge of a fantasy. Her mouth. The way it moves when she speaks. The feel of soft lips. Lips. I want to kiss the other ones.

“Mom! Change of plans!”

One hour to the minute later, Alana is on the beach with Ahn and Paula. We sit at the curb, waiting for Leilani. My eyes are on the path she’ll be taking, through the trees, house to street.

“Did you text her we are here?”

I look back at the expression, because there is annoyance in her words. Not a great start.

“Yeah. And I’m counting on you to be nice, Mom. Please. She is a great girl.”

Fire lights her eyes.

“Of course I’m going to be nice! Have I ever been anything but nice to your friends? Don’t piss me off.”

Haven’t heard that one in decades, but my brothers and I heard it plenty back in the day.

“My legs are hurting today. That’s why I’m quiet, Alekanekelo.”

Now I feel like a dick.

“Oh. Sorry. I brought Dad’s walker in case we need it.”

“I won’t need it. Here she comes. Let’s not talk about my knees in front of her, please.”

“Sure.”

My eyes find the smiling vision coming our way. She wears jeans and a navy tank. With every step, a high ponytail brushes bare shoulders. Nice.

“Very pretty,” Mom says.
