“There’s a good one for you, Dad! It’s got to be a twenty-footer!”
“I got it.”
Kicking my legs, I turn, get ahead of the three-footer, and paddle. My turn to crow a little. Showing off is pathetic. But my little girl used to be charmed by her Daddy. I just want to feel itonemore time before she leaves the room.
I rise with the wave, and hope she is watching.
“You should have seen us, Tutu. It was gnarly.”
My mother’s face beams with parental and grandmotherly pride. It is so far over the top, it’s funny.
“Have more,” she says, scooping an overflowing portion of hash browns onto Alana’s plate.
“K.”
I push back from the table and braid my fingers behind my head.
“Let’s talk about today’s plan. I thought we could start thinking about the menu. I want to take you to Umeke’s Poke. It’s the best apparently. We need to…”
“I don’t want to go! Dad, please. Can I stay with Ahn and Paula?”
My mother is silent, but she speaks loudly.
“Yeah, okay. Let me talk to Paula. Call her.”
My cell rings. Leilani. I put up a finger calling a break and get up from the table.
My mother signals she will talk to Paula. Moving toward my bedroom, I use my sexy voice.
“Morning.”
“Hi! What are you doing?”
“Just finished breakfast. Want me to come over and we can make out?”
I never listen to my own instructions.
“No. I’m serious. What are you doing?”
“Thinking about going to Kona for some Poke. You’ve heard of Umeke’s?”
“It is out of this world. But listen, I have a proposition for you.”
“That’s encouraging.”
She ignores my comment and continues.
“Last night on the phone, you mentioned you wanted to source the best of the best for the restaurant.”
“Yeah.”
“Well, I have a friend in the Waipi’o Valley. He is the Taro King. His family has been there for five generations growing the finest Taro. Would you and your mother like to go there and meet him today?”
“Yes!”
“I didn’t mention it before, because I had to pass it by him first. His name is Lani Anakoni.”
“Are you coming with us?”
