Leading the way, we climb the five stairs and enter the house. The entryway has a large lantern type light hanging from the tall ceiling. It casts a pattern across the space.
“So what do you have to show us?”
“This my beauty.”
As we round the corner, and look into the great room, it takes a moment to absorb the sight. Lani’s family in its entirety, and Nani’s too, sit in chairs and on wide couches, waiting with the biggest smiles on their faces. Noa’s here, but that is not all. Must be Mak sitting next to him.
“Surprise!”
The voices ring out and lift to the tall ceilings. Arrangements of cut exotic flowers on tabletops make the scene look gorgeous. Lani has thought of everything.
“What?!” Nani calls, hands to her face. “Makani!”
The tears start and he gets up to go to his mother.
Everyone starts talking at once. Including Alek and me.
Lani’s two grandchildren are jumping and screaming with excitement, seeing the adults revved up.
“Your brother’s here! Did you know?”
“No!”
Mak takes his mother in a big hug.
“All my boys! How did this happen? Am I dreaming?”
“Your boyfriend wanted the families to meet each other. I thought it was a good idea.”
Lani puts his arms around Nani’s waist.
“Ohana is the most important thing we have. I want to know you boys and you should know my children.”
“Mom! You look great! You’re walking better than I expected.”
“How long are you staying?”
“I’ll be going back with Alek and Alana.”
“I’m so happy you came!”
He turns to me and the familiar Medina smile lights his face.
“I’m Mak. Makani, the best-looking brother.”
Noa and Alek groan.
“Hello, Mak. Please excuse me for disagreeing.”
He likes that I said my truth. So does Alek who squeezes my side.
“See why I love her?”
“Okay, okay!” The host’s voice takes command. “Now let me introduce Alana to my children and two grandchildren. He takes her by the hand, leading her to the red couch and two chairs, occupied by his family.
“Alana, this is my youngest son Ino.”
“Hello,” she says shyly.
