“We might not be back till summer. I don’t know.”

He pulls me close. I feel the bicep he flexed for me a few weeks ago. Think it’s getting bigger.

“I’ll be here, waiting for you.”

Iwantto believe. Iwillbelieve in our love.

“I’ll be waiting too. Don’t go getting any new girlfriends.”

“Not going to happen.”

Our shaky promise is sealed with a kiss. No tongue.

Chapter 21

LEILANI

Lani’s house is the polar opposite of the little cottage at the farm’s entry. No comparison. I have been here, and so has Nani. It’s a first visit for Alek and Alana, and their reaction is spot on.

He made it so nice for us. I have never seen it look this enchanting. Twinkling white lights are strung the entire width of the deep porch, and entwined in the beams and around the posts. Comfy big chairs and wide chaise lounges sit waiting for visitors. Tropical colors make up the cushions. Orange, hot pink, yellow. Lime green. Below the porch, in front on either side of the stairs, flowers of Hawaii dot the scene. Hibiscus mostly, but there are a few plumerias.

Behind the house is a background made of shades of green. The trees and bushes surround the house in an embrace, making the colors of the blossoms even more vibrant. A tour of spectacular island homes could include Lani’s.

“This is very cool,” Alek says, driving up to the wide one story, and parking right in front.

Alana leans over the backseat.

“He lives here all by himself?”

“Yes. It is a family compound though.”

“The children have homes on the property too. You can’t see them from here,” Nani says. “Oh, it looks especially beautiful tonight.”

Large windows, taking up most of the front of the house, show a delicately lit interior. My attention is pulled to the front door, as Lani comes out to the porch. He has such a presence. Loose long hair against his brown skin looks stunning. Masculine. He’s dressed up for dinner, light blue linen shirt and white pants.

“He looks wonderful,” Nani says. “Doesn’t he?”

“Look at him waiting for you, Tutu.”

She exits the car before the rest of us do, and he takes the steps to greet her. Taking her hands, he spreads them out to have a look at what she wears. Of course he is pleased. The cobalt satin pants and shirt to match look stunning.

By the time we are out, they have exchanged a kiss or three.

“Welcome!”

Alek opens his palms.

“What a great place, Lani! This is beautiful.”

“For ohana only. It isourhome. Hello, little girl.”

He says it to Alana this time and she smiles.

“Hi.”

He and I lean in for a kiss on the cheek.

“Come in! I have something to show you all.”
