Though the bar is still busy when I leave, enough servers and bartenders are on duty, so I don’t feel bad for leaving. As I walk out to my car, though, I’m shocked to hear someone call my name. I turn around and see Nate jogging across the street toward me. I also see Rob heading toward the hotel’s entrance. It looks as though they just returned from somewhere.

My lips spread into a smile at the sight of him.

“Hey,” Nate says as he approaches me. “Fancy meeting you here.”

“I’m just heading home,” I reply. “What are you up to?”

“Rob and I just got back from the fort. That’s too bad you’re off work now, though. We were contemplating where to have dinner tonight, and I thought if we ate at The Cellar, I’d get to see you again.”

My heart pounds at his words, and I’m at a loss for what to say. We just look at one another, and I imagine myself jumping into his arms and kissing him hard on his soft lips. I never have thoughts like this, but I can’t help it with Nate. My attraction is strong, and after talking with him this afternoon, he may be the one exception I’d make to my “no dating” policy.

Realizing we’ve been silent for what seems like a beat too long, I clear my throat, forcing myself to break our eye contact. “Is that right?” I finally stammer, twirling my ponytail as a nervous gesture.

Nate takes a step closer to me. “Yeah.”

He’s standing close enough that I could just reach out and touch him. The last time I was this close to a man I was attracted to, I was a teenager. I really don’t know what to do right now, and I’m stunned when he reaches out to touch me first.

I gasp as my whole body reacts to his touch. His hands gently hold my arms below my elbows, stirring the muscles in my lower belly. My heart pounds even harder than before, and I feel weak, as if my legs could collapse beneath me at any second.

“Shawna.” Nate’s deep voice is practically a whisper as he pulls me closer while simultaneously lowering his head to my level. “Can I kiss you?”

The world stands still around us. His hands warm my skin as I take in his sandalwood scent. His beautiful face is just inches from mine as his green eyes look deep into mine.

I barely nod before his lips crash against mine, my eyes fluttering closed at the contact. He kisses me like I’ve never been kissed before. His tongue dances with mine as my hands rest on his hips, instinctively pulling him even closer. Nate steps closer, then continues moving, causing me to step back until my back is against my car.

Is this really happening right now? God, I hope this isn’t a dream because I don’t want to wake up.
