There’s silence on her end, and I wish we were on a FaceTime call again so I could see her reaction to my question. She probably thinks it’s too soon in our relationship for this. I mean, it is, isn’t it?

Finally, she speaks. “Is this really a hypothetical question, or were you offered a job?”

“Well, not officially. But the police chief told the four of us that if we ever want to work for him to give him a call. So, no, I haven’t been offered a job, but there’s the potential for me to have a job there.”

“Oh, my gosh! Nate, I think that’s wonderful!”

A smile spreads across my face. “You do?”

“Yes! I mean, I know our relationship is new, but I’d love to have you here. How do you feel about it?”

I chuckle. “I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since I left Port Townsend this morning. I even talked with my boss about it, and he’s supportive.”

“You did?” she asks, sounding surprised. “And he’s supportive?”

“Yeah, he was. He and I actually have similar pasts, and he had a long-distance relationship once, too. He told me I need to do what’s best for me and I could always come back to work for him if things don’t work out.”

“Wow,” she says. “It’s like the universe wants us to be together or something.” She chuckles.

“I know, right?” I chuckle, too, although I think she’s absolutely right.

Tomorrow, I’ll call the chief of police and let him know I’m interested in his offer.
