“That was so crazy last night. I can’t believe Stone used to date Carson’s sister!”

“Yeah, it’s pretty crazy,” I reply.

“I mean, what are the chances of that happening? It’s such a small world.”

What I want to know is what Carson’s sister is like. That’s another thing Lorelei had me considering… is Carson’s sister known for being honest, or has she lied about things in the past? I just hope Chelsea doesn’t take offense to me asking.

“It’s definitely a small world,” I say with a short chuckle. “So, can I ask you something about Carson’s sister?”

“Of course. Anything.”

“Are you close with her?” I ask. I’ve never heard Chelsea talk about her before, at least not in a way that implies they have a close relationship.

“Um, not exactlyclose,” she says. “I mean, we’re friendly whenever we see each other, but we only ever hang out at family functions. We don’t exactly live the same kind of lifestyle.”

“What do you mean?” I ask, intrigued by her answer. Chelsea is one of the nicest people I know, and she lives an honest lifestyle. What kind of person is she implying Taylor is?

“Oh, you know, she’s the one who just got married… to a man nearly twice her age.”

My eyebrows shoot up in surprise. “I didn’t realize that,” I say. “Does Carson only have one sister?”

“Yeah, just Taylor. The man she married––Wayne––is an actual millionaire. They met at some fancy shindig she was invited to by a friend, and they hit it off. Six months later, he proposed to her, and six months after that, they got married. Did I tell you how extravagant their wedding was?”

“No, you didn’t. I just remember you mentioning that Carson’s sister recommended that you skip the fancy wedding and go to Vegas instead.”

She laughs. “Yeah and thank goodness she did! I’m really looking forward to our destination wedding! Vegas is going to be so fun!”

“Yeah, it is,” I agree, but I want to get back to the topic at hand––Taylor. “So, Carson’s sister married a man twice her age who’s also a millionaire?”

“She sure did. They live on Mercer Island now in thishugehouse. Carson and I have been there once, and it was gorgeous.”

I decide to plunge right in with my question and hope Chelsea doesn’t take offense to it. “So, you said you’re not super close with Taylor… Would you say she’s an honest person? Or do you think there’s a chance she could’ve made up the story about Stone––err, Alex––cheating on her?”

Chelsea’s quiet for a moment. My heart is pounding so hard, I can hear it in my ears. The last thing I want to do is get in an argument with my best friend.

Finally, she replies, “Well, if I’m being honest, I don’t know how to answer that.”

I stay quiet. I’m not exactly sure how to respond to that, and I’m hoping she’ll elaborate.

Luckily, she does. “I’d like to think Taylor wouldn’t make up a lie like that, but the truth is, I wouldn’t put it past her.Pleasedon’t ever tell Carson I said that!”

My heart fills with hope. Maybe Stoneistelling the truth.

“Of course I won’t say anything,” I assure her.

Chelsea and I continue talking a while longer, but my mind is only half-listening. The other half is trying to comprehend what this means for my impression of Stone now.

After we say goodbye, I decide I should get Brianne’s take on the situation as well, so I call her. Hopefully, she’s not at work right now.

“Olivia!” Thankfully, she answers. “How are you doing?”

I tell Brianne everything I’ve been feeling since last night, as well as what Chelsea just told me about Taylor. Then, Brianne tells me about the conversation she had with Stone in the parking lot after I left.

“I think he’s telling the truth,” she says. “And it’s obvious that he cares about you, Olivia.”

Her words make me smile. “You think so?” I ask with a shaky laugh.

“I really do. You should call him and hear what he has to say.”
