Maya was going to punch him. She really was. She had no idea why she had thought Rafe would be the one who could help her in this situation. He didn’t seem the least bit phased by her discomfort and she wrapped her arms around herself to keep from reaching out to smack him for real.
“Oh…” Leo spoke first, his eyes going wide. He exchanged a glance with Darius and his mate nodded. Leo looked back at her, “Oh, sis.”
“Shut up. Just. Shut. Up.” Maya snapped.
“You bonded to him.” Leo’s voice had gone low with awe. “He’s your mate?”
“Why are we in the kitchen whispering if he’s your mate?” Darius asked, reaching for an orange again and this time snagging one while Maya was distracted.
“Because he’s human, like I said. He doesn’t know about mate bonds or the heat or any of that because he doesn’t know about people like us.”
“Are you sure?” Darius asked at the same time Leo said, “He’s Zoey’s brother, right?”
“This is the first time Zoey’s met him.” Rafe supplied with a shake of his head. “He doesn’t know about her, or us, at least as far as we’re aware.”
“Well isn’t he going to find out when the bond gets so strong he can’t help but jump you and you lose control, fang out and bite him?”
“I said, shut up.” Maya hissed.
“That’s her answer to everything. Just don’t talk about it. You don’t have to face it if you don’t talk about it.” Nova had edged into the kitchen without Maya noticing and she glared at her little sister.
“What’re you doing? Eavesdropping?”
“I don’t need to eavesdrop. Seer, remember?” Nova rolled her eyes. “I’m getting a bottle of water for Zoey. She needs some fluids after all that crying she was doing.”
“Thank you.” Rafe offered her a warm smile. “That’s very sweet.”
“Yes, she’s definitely the sweet one.” Maya muttered, “Because what I want to do right now is strangle all of you.”
“And that’s why you’re the one we’re all secretly scared of.” Rafe was smirking when Maya shot a glare at him.
Maya put her hands over her face and just barely held back her scream of frustration. She needed help and instead this was what she got. Teasing and joking, sarcasm and sass. She really couldn’t remember at that moment why it was she loved these idiots so much.
She dropped her hands and sighed, “Will you please just do me a favor and get him out of here?”
“Is that really what you want?” Leo raised an eyebrow.
“Yes. Please.” She all but begged. “I need him gone, out of my space, at least for tonight, at least until I can talk to Zoey tomorrow and we can figure out how to explain all of this to him.”
“Okay.” Darius nodded. “If you need some time…”
“Yeah, we all know you’re a big fan of delaying the inevitable.” Leo teased his mate and Darius pulled him against his side, planting a kiss on his temple.
“Never going to let me forget that, are you?”
“Nope.”
Rafe pushed back up to his full height with a grunt, “I think that’s about all the cuteness I can take. If it’s settled then, I’ll get with Zoey and we’ll take Zander and the kid with us. It only makes sense for them to stay at the house anyway. They’re Zo’s family and our place has more room.”
“Thank you.” Maya breathed a sigh of relief when he finally came through with a solution.
“We’ll get going too. It’s late.” Leo extricated himself from Darius and wrapped Maya in a hug. “Call us if you need us, yeah?”
“Yeah.”
Leo pulled back and smiled softly, “I can’t believe it. My little sister, bonded.”
“Don’t start with that. Please. I can’t take it tonight.” Maya bit her lip, shaking away his gentle tone and the tsunami of emotions that came with it.
