“You don’t know that.”

Maya shook her head, “Maybe not, but either way he’s going to need time to process that the world he thought he knew isn’t as normal as it seems on the surface. To be honest, I need some time too. Even without seeing him at all I can feel the bond growing and reaching for him. He’s on my mind all the time and it’s impossible to think of anything else. That’s why I’m doing this trip for Leo. It’s a few hours on the road with nothing to distract me so I can think and get my head on straight before I figure out what comes next.”

“What do you mean what comes next?” Nova narrowed her eyes.

“I’ll be back tonight, tomorrow at the latest.” Maya effectively sidestepped the question.

“I think this trip is a really bad idea.”

“Did you see something that makes you think that?”

“I thought you never wanted me to tell you what I saw of your future.”

Maya groaned, “Nova, don’t play that game with me right now. If you saw something dangerous, I need to know.”

“No.” Nova all but stomped her feet like the teenager she truly was. “I didn’t see anything but that doesn’t mean…”

“I’ll check in when I get to Umbra territory.” Maya cut her sister off, angry with her for not understanding why she needed this, but she refused to leave on such a sour note. She kissed the top of Nova’s head, “I love you. Call me if you need anything at all.”

“Maya…” Nova’s voice was gentler now, and she didn’t continue, just shook her head and moved aside as Maya shouldered her backpack.

“I’ll be safe. Promise.”

Maya grabbed her helmet from the table near the entryway and her keys off the hook. She headed out the door but Nova followed her. Maya trudged down the stairs to the parking lot and turned to where her shiny black and chrome motorcycle was parked beneath the overhang. Her breath gasped out of her when she caught sight of it and Nova, who had been standing at the top of the stairs to wave goodbye hurried down to her side.

“What? What is it?” she asked before she skidded to a stop next to Maya and gasped. “Oh shit.”

Maya’s bike, her beautiful, expensive, fast as lighting bike, was smashed to pieces. The windscreen was shattered. The front tire was slashed to shreds. The back axle was twisted. The gas tank had three long cuts gouged into it and the smell of gasoline was strong from where it had poured out onto the concrete.

It hadn’t been like this even an hour ago. She knew because when she’d returned from seeing Leo she’d checked the gauges to see if she would need to stop and fill up on gas before leaving town. The bike had been fine then, completely untouched, which meant this had happened recently and all while she was just upstairs though she hadn’t heard anything.

“What the fuck?” Maya gaped in horror, flipping her gaze to her sister. “Was it like this when you came upstairs?”

“No. Of course not. I mean, I didn’t notice it but…”

“It would be pretty fucking hard to have missed it.” Maya cursed, “Which means it just happened, while we were upstairs.”

“But.. how?” Nova hissed, lowering her voice and glancing around the parking lot as if they might not be alone.

“You’re asking me?” Maya frowned. “You’re the Seer.”

“I didn’t see this. I swear.” Nova turned back to her after scanning the lot and determining they were the only ones outside.

“Well it certainly makes your bad feeling about me leaving seem a lot more rational.” Maya reached forward and touched the gouges that were most obvious. The metal was hot to the touch but she swore she felt a cold chill run down her back. “Can you catch a scent?”

“No.” Nova shook her head, “The gasoline is too overpowering. Why? Do you think another wolf did this?”

Maya stretched her fingers wide, lining them up with the cuts on the tank. There were only three instead of four but it was easy for her to imagine it. Someone with claws, big ones, could have made those marks far more easily than someone with a knife.

She thought about that strange sensation she’d had, the one that told her she was being watched. She’d brushed it off, certain it was only the mate bond lurking in the back of her mind. She hadn’t been paying attention, not as much as she should have been, not like she would have been before Zander turned her world upside down. If she had, maybe she’d have realized she was being followed.

“Not a wolf.” Maya turned back to her sister. “A bear.”

Nova’s eyes went wide, “You think the bear shifters from the other night did this?”

“I don’t know. Maybe. I can’t think of anyone else so angry with me that they’d destroy my bike.”

“I mean, you have pissed off a lot of people over the years.” Nova’s lips twitched as if she wanted to smile and Maya scowled at her sister.
