“Don’t start.”

“It could have been some of those macho guys you bested in Enforcer training, they could be holding a grudge.” Nova shrugged, “Or one of the guys you threw out of Hyde’s for fighting. Or one of the guys you got into a fight with yourself when they...”

“That was all a long time ago.” Maya grit her teeth and Nova clearly decided her point had been made because she let it go.

“You’re right. I can’t see anyone in the packs doing this.”

It wasn’t that it was impossible to believe someone in the pack would lose their cool. They were powerful shifters and sometimes their animals got the best of them. But it was hard to believe anyone in either pack would be dumb enough to go after Maya. She was a born princess of the Crescent Pack, the younger sister of the Moirae Pack Queen, and one of the most well trained Enforcers ever since she’d started training when she was so young. For one of the wolves to have come after Maya like this she must have offended them greatly and as many people as she might have annoyed over the years she couldn’t think of even one of them dumb enough to do this.

“I need to report this, both to the Sheriff and to Leo.” Maya cursed again, “Fuck. I’m not going to be able to go check on that pack for Leo now.”

“Yes, you are.” Nova fished a set of keys out of her pocket and held them out. “You can take the Jeep. I’ll report this and call Leo to let him know.”

“Are you sure?” Maya furrowed her brow, confused.

Hadn’t Nova just been trying to get her to stay? Wasn’t an excuse not to leave exactly what Nova would have hoped for? This was her chance to tell Maya that fate clearly wanted her to stay in Noir but instead, her sister was offering up her own vehicle.

“You said you need to go, not just for Leo but for yourself, to think. I’m not going to stop you and I’m not going to let anyone else stop you either.” Nova shook the keys enticingly. “Take the Jeep and do what you need to do. While you’re gone I’ll try to do some scrying, see if I can get a better read on what happened here and maybe figure out what those bear shifters think they’re up to.”

Maya took the keys with shaky fingers, “Thank you, sis.”

Nova only nodded but Maya pulled her close and hugged her tight. Nova hugged her back and then pulled away with a reassuring nod. Maya took the hint and headed to the Jeep before she could convince herself that this was some kind of sign she should stay.

She paused with the door of the vehicle open and looked back, “Why don’t you throw a bag together and come with me?”

Nova shook her head, “I should stay and take care of this.”

“We can call Leo from the road. He’ll have someone look into it.”

“You don’t really want me to go with you.” Nova’s smile was soft and knowing, “You’re just worried about leaving me here alone.”

“Of course I’m worried.” Maya frowned, “You didn’t see this coming and usually the only things you can’t see are tied to your own future. What if…”

“What if I didn’t see it because next they’re going to come for me?” Nova finished when she trailed off and Maya’s throat felt tight at the thought of it. Nova rolled her eyes, “My Jeep was sitting right there and they didn’t touch it. They’re not coming for me.”

“Then why didn’t you see it?” Maya insisted.

“I don’t know.” Nova admitted and her smile returned when she shrugged, “But I swear if I can’t see those damn bears because one of them is my future mate, I will take back every nice thing I’ve ever said about fate.”

That managed to make Maya laugh a little and she shook her head, “God no. Anything but that.”

Nova grinned, “Can you even imagine me with a big, brawny, knuckle-headed bear shifter?”

“No, and I don’t want to.” Maya grinned back.

“Then don’t and neither will I.” Nova pushed her hair back, “Now stop worrying about me and go on already. I’ll handle this and we’ll figure everything out when you get back.”

“You’re sure you’ll be okay alone?”

“I’m never alone.” Nova tapped her temple. “I have every future imaginable to keep me company.”

“Nova…” Maya said, her voice a warning not to joke about that and Nova sighed.

“I’m calling Leo as soon as you leave. Promise. I’ll be fine.”

“Okay.” Maya relented. “Just be careful.

“You too.” Nova waved as Maya tossed her bag into the Jeep and then climbed inside.
