“Are you okay?” she finally asked, rolling so that she was on her back and he was on his side, just above her.

“Better than.” His green eyes sparkled and he grinned, “Last night was…”

“Wild?” She smirked and he laughed at her choice of words.

“That’s definitely one word for it.” He brushed her hair back off her face, “I was going to say intense. Last night was intense.”

“”It was.” she agreed.

“Is it always like that?” Zander propped himself up on an elbow, comfortable enough with their dirt covered, naked bodies not to rush to get up.

“No.” Maya shook her head. “It was your first shift. It’ll get easier. You..”

“Not that.” he cut her off. “I meant our wolves. Will they always be so crazy for one another?”

“God, I certainly hope so.” Maya smiled and Zander leaned down to kiss her.

She turned her head away, “Our wolves hunted down a rabbit last night, remember?”

“Oh. Yeah.” Zander looked mildly horrified. “I forgot about that.”

“Let’s get cleaned up, loverboy. After we brush our teeth, I’ll gladly kiss you.”

Zander chuckled but gave in. He pushed to his feet and then leaned down to give her a hand. Maya stood up and nearly fell over again. Zander caught her and frowned.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah. I just got lightheaded for a second there.” She shook the strange feeling off.

“Is that typical after a full moon?”

“No. But I’ve never spent a full moon chasing my mate through the woods and fucking until sunup either.” She smirked. “I’m fine. Promise.”

Zander gave her another once over but ultimately let her go. Maya moved towards the backpack they’d left on the other side of the clearing with her supplies. As she went through the motions of brushing her teeth and rinsing with a bottle of water, she felt oddly off kilter. She tried not to let it show as she passed the water and toothpaste to Zander and reached for the wet wipes to clean up.

Something was different. Something had changed and she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. It wasn’t just that she was mated now. She could feel Zander through the bond and she knew that his wolf was sleeping happily deep inside him just like her own was after a night of mating. It wasn’t even just that she was happier than she’d ever thought she could be. She had shared her troubled past with Zander and he had accepted it, accepted her just as she was. In doing so he’d allowed her to truly move beyond it and instead of simply surviving, she was ready to start living. All of that combined might have explained why she felt so different this morning but it didn’t explain one thing.

“You ready to head home?”

Maya looked up and found that Zander was dressed. His hair was wet from where he’d splashed himself with water. He was wearing a faded gray t-shirt that hugged his chest and equally worn jeans and boots. He looked sexy as hell and she pressed herself against him to steal a kiss. She could feel Zander’s answering smile as he kissed her back. He tasted like mint and she licked his lips before pulling back to smile up at him.

“Now it’s a good morning.” he teased playfully and Maya wiggled out of his grip when he slid his hands to her ass.

“It is a very good morning. I like waking up with you.”

“That’s good to hear since I plan on waking up with you for the rest of our lives.”

“You really are good with that silver tongue of yours.” she laughed and bent to slide her feet into her own shoes and then straightened her clothes and wrapped her hair into a messy bun on top of her head.

“So…” Zander raised an eyebrow when she was done. “Ready to go home?”

Maya chewed the inside of her cheek before shaking her head, “Actually… I have this weird feeling we’re supposed to go to Rafe and Zoey’s house.”

An expression of pure relief crossed Zander’s face, “You feel that too?”

“You’re feeling pulled towards their house?”

“Yeah. I thought it was just me, that maybe it was just because of my wolf’s link to her wolf, wanting to introduce himself because of the blood link or something. I figured it could wait.”
